We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hummingbird B and B. The room was perfectly adequate (though not luxurious). Ellen was absolutely gracious, and extremely helpful with her local knowledge. The incredible views of the volcano and the Lake, as well as the beautiful gardens and Ellen's hospitality made this so worth it. Ellen offered us a rainy season discount without us even asking, *and* helped us figure out how to get our tires (yes, plural!) repaired.
I would say that a car is a must to stay here (El Castillo in general, not specific to Hummingbird Nest, which is conveniently located on the main street through town). It's a bit of a haul on a dirt road to get here, but there is safe parking once you're at the B&B.
We found our own nightlife and cheered on some local guys playing soccer. That said, if you're looking for a "tourist" experience, or really enjoy the nightlife, El Castillo might not be for you...it's a small, Tico town with mostly (very friendly) locals. But if you're looking for a quiet place to relax and unwind, we loved this quiet mountain town, and would stay at Hummingbird Nest again in a heartbeat.
Room Tip: There are only two rooms at the B and B. Call ahead to make sure there's one available.
