We've been told that this hotel shouldn't have called itself the Orient Bay Hotel. The area known as Orient Bay is actually at the other end of Orient Beach. They would take us to Club Orient (the nude resort) if we didn't specify. This tends to confuse taxis. Better to let them know it's in Mount Vernon or near Jardins de Chevrise. Of course, having used only taxis during our long weekend, I think a car would be your best bet. We paid about 40 dollars from the airport to the hotel. We continued to use taxis throughout the weekend though, because we did quite a lot of drinking. As a side note, I don't think I saw one police car or officer, so if you take some joy in getting drunk and driving late at night on tiny roads, no one is going to stop you. One thing you need to look out for with the taxis is that they most likely get kickbacks from places they bring you...like if you ask for a stripclub but they bring you to a brothel...you gotta be careful! haha.
As for the hotel, we had a villa right next to the main office. The people who work there are very friendly, very quiet, and very French. We don't know any French, but we were friendly and courteous and that's all anyone really wants anyway.
We stayed in the Comfort Villa because there were four of us. This was a pre-bachelor party weekend for one of my friends. The beds are just regular beds, furniture in the living room was some wicker chairs, but we were barely there. It was great to have a full-sized fridge in the place for the Carib (we bought a case at a store on the way from the airport) and water (we drank water out of the tap, it was good). Water pressure in the showers was pretty weak, but then again, you have a nice little swimming pool right outside your front door. We usually went in there in the morning and when we got back from the beach. The villa came with blankets, sheets, extra pillows, and towels, but not beach towels, and soap. They changed the towels once, and although we would have liked it every day, we have no complaints. It was air-conditioned, which was nice. One of the windows opened towards Orient Beach, so we climbed out and sat on the roof at night. Probably not the safest thing in the world, but it was nice. Speaking of safes, there is not a safe in the room, but the office has one. We didn't use it, we just brought very little things of value, hid what we had, and were careful about locking the door.
Proximity to the beach: You're looking at about a 10 minute walk to the actual beach and then another 10 or 15 if you want to get down to the part of the beach with the bars, restaurants, beach chairs and umbrellas. Still, not a bad location at all. We didn't have a complaint about the walk at all. It's a beautiful place to be walking.
A couple of things about the area that we found:
We only went to two beaches, Orient and Pinel, but I've heard that Maho is great. We only had a half day Friday, then Saturday, Sunday, and a half day Monday. On Orient, we liked Strings as a place to sit and get mixed drinks, we liked this little family owned white-clapboard place with a wood deck as a spot to buy wraps and beer. We walked down into the nude beach once and my friends decided to go for it. (Lots of alcohol was involved.) We walked on a road behind Orient Beach and found a convenience store and a cafe that had these long 6 dollar french bread sandwiches. Boo Boo Jam's was amazing all around. Great food, great drinks, great live music. We were drunk, full, and happy when we left.
We loved Pinel Island. We actually walked down to the ferry to go out there, which was 6 or 7 dollars. We hiked around the whole island, although most people stayed on the beach. We had a great meal out there and the water was perfect for swimming. Cash only if I remember correctly.
The casinos are nothing like they are in the US. They are very very tiny. Of course, you can lose your money just as quickly. Casablanca is not a strip club. It is a brothel. However, the Platinum Club is a strip club and was great. The casino next to Platinum was the one we spent some time at. I would have loved to spend some time in Marigot. It looked like a great little town. We ate one night at a pizza place that was pretty good, down the hill from Casablanca. We also ate at a nice Italian Place next to the casino near Platinum Club. The name escapes me.
Take a cheap digital camera. Take a beach towel, your sunglasses, a good book, and some cash, although you'll spend a good amount of time just staring out at the water and at the beautiful (and topless) French women. American dollars were accepted everywhere we went. Put on lots of sunblock! We re-applied and still got cooked! Overall, a really fun weekend. Wish we had more time there!
