“Off the main road but well worth a detour.”

Cold winter morning in February and looking for a good place to have lunch on the journey home. I have visited this country Inn before with my late wife and wanted to see if it was as good as I had in my memory.
Warm welcome and the menu included many of our favourites. All dishes were served in an attractive manner by attentive staff. The food was as good as it looked with some excellent touches. Even the quality of the serviettes shows the attention to detail. Plates were returned with not a trace of leftover. The sweet menu was extensive and the choice made was so delicious, it is hard not to ask for more.
A pleasant conversation with a lovely waitress, who originates from Brittany, showed us the other 2 establishments within this group.
We are looking forward to some warmer weather and the chance to visit them. We have booked for lunch next week and hope that the weather will have cleared up a bit by then.
Highly recommended.

“Good food, good service”

We were made to feel very welcome by our French waitress. She was most helpful and friendly with useful suggestions regarding our choices of food and drink. Speaking of which, I'm vegetarian and am often disappointed by the lack of imagination in pubs (goat's cheese, tomatoes etc.) anyway, not at The Ship. They had some lovely dishes to chose from and we really enjoyed our pasta dish with lovely blue cheese and mushrooms.

The dessert was excellent as well. We were celebrating Karen's new job and had mentioned this to the waitress. The chocolate pot dessert came out of the kitchen with "Congratulations" piped in chocolate around the plate, how thoughtful.

The log fire was warm(ish) and added atmosphere to the lovely lighting. The wine list was extensive and we generally had a great evening.

“Very good gastropub”

This is one of our favourite places to eat on the weekends, I can give a great recommendation as we have eaten here 6+ times in the last 4 months. Every time, the food is great, wonderfully cooked and quality ingredients.

It can get busy, so make sure you book at table on the weekend. Has a nice wood burning fireplace in the bar and we always try and sit here.

Service staff can be stressed at times but everything is fine. All in all, go enjoy and like us, you will go back.

“Unexpected pleasure”

After a long day out with young children we were on our way home and decided to stop off somewhere for supper. The ship was chosen at random as we drove past.

What a find. My wife and I are well travelled and have eaten in the most elegant Michelin starred restaurants so appreciate high quality food.

For a pub this was truly exceptional. The menu was imaginative and every detail was clearly well thought out and prepared with great care and attention.

We had the 28day ribeye. It was cooked to perfection at medium rare and served with a green peppercorn sauce, outstanding mushrooms, and perfect chunky chips dusted with seasoning and herbs. It was as good as anything I have eaten in Paris, where they really know how to serve steak and frites.

Also outstanding were the bacon and cheddar red onion tartlet, pate with an excellent chutney and superb apple crumble.

Service was good from all of the staff, particularly from the manageress.

It is not cheap but highly recommended
