“Scruffy carpets and dated accomodation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

The carpeted entrance area into the pub itself is black. With dirt, not by design. The accommodation block has a substantial stair and landing carpet that is probably domestic grade. It has a worn dirty track down the middle. My room carpet was also stained and dirty. There were other issues but for the sake of brevity lets just say the place needs investment and some experienced hotel keeping input. On the good side the heating worked very well and the sheets and towels and bathroom were clean. The restaurant seemed busy, probably owing to three courses for £9.99 [I think.] However if the landlords couldn’t keep the carpets clean I wasn’t going to trust their kitchen. I paid about £55 a night for three nights b&b. Good accommodation and good food in this area seems generally more expensive than other rural areas of the UK. Maybe because of the lack of budget hotels.

I would just like to say that we are a very busy country pub and do not have time to respond to every review written about us, obviously reviews are a very personal view and as long standing experienced publicans of over 15yrs we are well aware that you can not please everyone all of the time, we do however try our very best to give a very warm welcome, and provide clean and comfortable rooms for your stay, and our chef's produce home made food to a very very high standard, we have a lot of regular diners and also a lot of repeat customers in our rooms, so I think this speaks for itself.
The gentleman in question who wrote the review was travelling with a colleague who also stayed with us, and returned the following week for another stay!
I always think the best way to find out about a place is try it for yourself! so if your passing our way and want a traditional country village Inn that does great food pop in and try us or better still stay the night and really soak up the atmosphere and enjoy.

“Nice stop off”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

Popped in en route to Somerset for a bite to eat, had the club sandwich and thought Pasta with Pesto was a great option for the kids menu, if anything the portions were overly large (shouldn't complain really), really enjoyed it. The young chaps behind the bar and serving were very attentive and polite.

“TRY SOMEWHERE ELSE FIRST!”

The proprietors are a miserable couple who seem to regard paying guests as an inconvenience. They have no idea how to provide a welcome or look after guests. They would be well advised to consider another occupation as clearly the hospitality industry is not for them.

The letting rooms are sited on the first floor of a converted outbuilding and can only be accessed by a very steep staircase - elderly or infirmed beware! The 4 rooms are "basic". Ours had soiled carpets and nets, the beds were lumpy and uncomfortable.

The food served to me was inedible. This was apparently my fault for not ordering it to be cooked in the correct way! I didn't get to speak to the chef so there was no opportunity or offer of recompense. We were treated to a dining room being laid up for breakfast whilst we were still eating our dinner and were then extricated from the bar (in a less than pleasant manner) at around 11.30pm. As residents there on a Saturday night, this was a missed a trick since we were there for a reunion of friends from all over the UK and would likely have spent more money in the bar that night than would normally be taken in a week - had, of course, we'd been allowed to do so.

In short, if you're looking for accommodation in the Salisbury area, try anywhere else first! An most unpleasant stay.

“Very good, would definitely stay again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Room very pleasant, clean and comfortable, walls a bit thin, could hear people next door clearly, that was the only down side. Liked the fact that TV did not dominate the room, as in some places, although TV reception not good, nice DVD library to borrow from, evening meal cheap and very good, breakfast very good. Showers in all rooms did not work, but landlord apologised and was arranging for plumber to come. I knocked my coffee cup over on the carpet but the landlord was very pleasant about it, saying he would tell the cleaner and accidents happen. Would definitely stay again if in the area.

“Perfect stay, great food, proper beer and welcoming people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

We stayed here during a trip to the Salisbury races (ideal as it is only the other side of Wilton House). Easy to find and only a few miles out of town yet far enough out of town to be in the countryside.
Hospitality was great; we were given a warm welcome and shown to our room which was clean and more than adequate for our needs.
Food gets a 10. We had a 'quick' dinner which was cooked before the official opening for dinner to accomodate for the fact we had to be out sharpish, so many thanks for being accomodating. Burger was top notch and chips were out of this world.
Breakfast was spot on too, as was the baguette I had for lunch.
Plenty of choice of proper beer on tap too.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the Barford Inn or going back if I ever need accomodation in the area. We'll definately be back for lunch/dinner at some point too!
Thanks all for putting us up (and possibly putting up with us!) for the evening and morning.
