Our room had not been cleaned. The floor and surfaces were covered in dust (including the kettle!) and hair. Thank goodness we were only staying the one night. The public bar is very tatty and unwelcoming. We were asked to pay for our room as soon as we arriived and at a higher figure than the on-line booking. The sign outside the Stowey Arms describes the rooms as 'luxury'. Whilst our room was pleasantly furnished, it was mall and certainly not luxury! This was not good value for money. I'd never stay there again.

We were looking for a comfortable overnight pub stay somewhere between Devon and Cornwall, and were so pleased that we chose The Stowey Arms. Our only regret is that we stayed just one night when we should have stopped there for two or three. Our family of four enjoyed the two bedroom family suite, which gave the kids a separate room from the adults. Breakfast was included and was a hearty full English breakfast made to order. There is not much else in Exminster, but it is a quaint little village nonetheless that is located only a few minutes driving from the coast. Our only criticism of the room would have to be the water-saver shower that provided a mere trickle. I would also check on whether there is any live pub entertainment when planning to stay, because the rooms are directly above the pub and you'll share in the noise. The pub staff are very friendly and go out of their way to make sure that your stay is comfortable and enjoyable.

Only booked for sunday lunch on the spur of the moment and was pleasantly surprised. Its a friendly pub with a welcoming atmosphere. Friendly staff and an excellent carvery offering all you'd expect and very good value for money.

I can't comment on the rooms or the place as a hotel as I didn't stay - I was passing through. I had travelled by car down the M5 from Leicester on my way to Looe for a weeks holiday. I had had enough of driving and wanted to take a break - but I didn't fancy going to a motorway establishment.
We ordered soft drinks from the bar as I was driving ( but I was envious as they had a selection of real ales ). I enquired whether it would be possible to get something to eat. We were advised by the friendly barmaid that as it was 5:00 p.m. the restaurant had not yet opened for the evening. However, she contacted the landlord and we were told that they would be happy to make us a snack. We chose sandwiches - the ham was off the bone and beautiful and my wife had prawns. They made us feel so welcome I would have been happy to stay the night.
