“Good value honest food and service”

I often visit this area and need somewhere for dinner with my son. This time we chose The Pelican. It remains an excellent proper local pub which also caters for the traveler and has guest rooms. The food and service were both excellent - I had an excellent Roast Lamb and my son a very good steak and I paid a sensible price for each. The beer is good but I was limited to a small one as I had to drive home afterwards. Service was excellent and friendly; we could have stayed and joined the locals for their quiz night (this was a Monday) if he had the time. The only issue might be parking if you arrive late, we didn't and parked without any problems. I shall be going there again shortly.

“Salad floating in a soup of fat. Not a great birthday lunch!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

I hadn't eaten in the Pelican for years but wanted a country pub lunch with my family on my birthday. The heavy smell when we walked in was one of their deep fat fryer.....I should have realised what was to come. Firstly I couldn't find any salads on the menu so i asked for the duck and pear salad starter as a larger main dish. Great. Except when it arrived it smelt suspiciously strongly of the same deep fat fryer smell. Gross! And there was nothing crispy at all. It was so fat-sodden! The salad itself was floating literary in about a centimetre of oily duck/fryer fat. I had to tip the bowl up and pour the liquid out onto a side plate. Then about half the meat was inedible fatty duck skin. Even more gross! Where was the attention to detail? No complaints about the fish and chips but 'nothing special' was the feedback. Gammon portion size was extremely small and 'stingy' was the word used. Sorry Pelican staff but someone is letting you all down rather badly! I will not return or recommend.

“A worthy stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

I found the staff exceedingly friendly. We were greeted with a smile and given friendly instructions about where we could dine, about the smoking areas and the inn's facilities. Our meal - steak - was cooked very nicely. Our room was spacious and tidy. We asked for room service (not sure if normal procedure there or not) for our desserts which was happily acknowledged. Just a few quibbles: the 'bread and butter pudding' was just average - a bit bland and could have done with more than two raisins in it. And, the bathroom wasn't spotless - there was dirt in the shower and the toilet looked like it only had a cursory clean. Otherwise the room was faultless - although the tele was a little on the small side, but not really a big deal. The grounds were large and spacious surrounding the inn and there was ample parking. Well worth the price. I would stay there again if I was in the area.

“Nice inn just off the highway on the way to Salisbury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

We were caught in a bind that there are no hotels/B&B's in Warminster & the hotels in Salsbury all thought they were 5 star ratings when the told me their rates. Sometimes you can have problems finding hotels/B&B's in England not sure why. In any case we found a cute Inn just off the highway between the 2 towns & it turned out to be a true GEM. The hosts were very friendly & helpful & the food was great. They are a self contained Inn with a combination Pub/Restaurant. The room was a nice size & very clean. If my wife & I were in the area in the future we would definately stay there again. The rate was very resonable.
The locals who came to the Inn were also very friendly, helpful & a treat to be around & they made us feel at home.
