We spent five fabulous days at Le Segala, where we enjoyed Bed, Breakfast and the Table d’hote dinner, delightfully prepared in regional specialities by the hostess Jennie Pennink. It was clean, warm and convivial. The hosts were welcoming and well-informed in local activities, which was particularly helpful to us as this was our first visit to this part of France.
Cazillac was a fantastic base; enabling us to access the local beauty spots easily. Those that remain in our minds include:
Rocamadour - for its beautiful views, the Chateau and the Abbey. We have since learned that it is the second most visited site outside Paris.
Collonges la Rouge -- for its stunning red sandstone.
Domme - the clifftop fortified town.
Pech Merle - the massive caverns with some of the oldest rock paintings in France.
Cahors - the wonderful black wines
All this is set within the beautiful Dordogne river valley, that snakes through the area. We drifted downstream lazily in our canoe and found a beautiful place to picnic. We went walking, birdwatching and had a thoroughly restful and peaceful time.
We understand an airport with access to Paris & London is about to open in Brive, which will make it even more convenient.
