It was difficult to decide the overall rating number. If there had not been several niggles I would have given a 4, as it is I can't go over 3.
The good:
Good price.
Its an Ibis, so fairly predictable
Easy parking
Easy access from Colmar, Freiburg-i-B, the Route des Vins, and the Autoroute (just around the corner from a very nice McDonalds for those who need one)
OK bathroom, although not keen on the shower curtain
Decent bedroom, comfy bed
Clean
On the whole - pleasant staff
The not good:
Poor security - room locks with a standard metal key and only has the little turn button on the inside - you know, like on cheap house locks; no deadbolt, no chain. This could be offset to a degree by the fact that the reception was right by the front door, except that it was often single staffed and that member of staff was doing double duty on bar duty, assisting in the restaurant.
Free wifi hassle - yes it was free. But. Slow, with a low limit of 200mb a day, and banned were streaming, and VOIP (Skype). So no internet based entertainment. The TV's not in a great place so entertainment is not great. And, you have to get a new sheet of paper with new login details every day, even though it says it will renew as long as you are there - but it doesn't, so using frequent wifi is a pain in the neck. There is an internet corner near the reception and the restaurant but it is v-e-r-y slow
The air conditioning debacle - it has been noted here on TA all summer but still not fixed. Exposed pipes running down the corridors, lots of valves and labels but no connections and no AC. It really is not good enough. There was a sign stuck on the door near reception (in French only) apologizing, sort of, and offering fans. We were OK on that front but wanted to have the window open instead. That was OK (very poor latch on the window which took loads of wrist to turn and latch, sort of) but then we got the smoke from the smokers at the service entrance nearby at about 5am.
There was no notation on the Ibis website about the failed AC and it still said there was AC. I knew in advance by the TA reviews, but found it hard to believe that it was still out.
The coffee machine in the breakfast room gave up and we wound up with very poor coffee. That had a good result actually, we realized we didn't want to spend €17 (for 2) for breakfast after that and went to the absolutely fantastic bakery just down the street and had fabulous formula breakfasts for €3.90 each (coffee, juice canette, and either bread with jam and butter or vienoisserie - the almond croissant was huge and wonderful) all items made fresh right behind the counter, rustic tables inside and out.
Inaccuracy on check in. We reserved on line using my A-Club ID, for a double bed and requested a quiet room. On arrival (no paperwork, no signatures) we were given twin beds in the first room behind the bar. To be fair, after asking for another, with no comment we were given another key, to a double down the hall.
At least two of the reception staff have a British Union flag on their name badges. This must be so that some criteria can be met as I found it difficult to communicate in English with one. I assumed when I saw the flag that basic English was on offer. I would have tried my basic French otherwise.
>> So, all in all, a marred experience which could and should have been much better with a little effort.
I can't believe it has taken an entire season to cure the AC.
Room Tip: Two floors, both above ground level on the right. Because of the AC problem I would not recommend o...
