“Not so much....”

I hate to not speak well of places on trips that I take but I know this is why you are reading this so I will tell it like I saw it. You have to know up front that the location of this hotel is way out of the way, most of the Chateau's that you would want to see while visiting the Loire Valley are on the other side of the River. It would take awhile to get anywhere and there is nothing and nowhere to eat other than the hotel for miles. We checked in and were told we had been upgraded when we walked in the room I was surprised and not in a good way, I don't think it was much of an upgrade....This hotel has been added onto in several directions the section we stayed in for four nights was built into the hill and the bottom floor smelled very musty, we where on the second floor where the only way to reach it was a very small elevator which said only 4 people could ride at a time. I asked if there was a stair case anywhere and was told it was only for emergency.....I have never been to a hotel that had that. I was shown a room on the other side a couple of days later but did not seem worth the move. The first day we where there they had a large group and we arrived late in the afternoon and was not up for a heavy dinner so we had a glass of wine outside in the garden came into the bar area asked for another glass of wine and some cheese and bread, I know they where very busy with the dining room and the large group but you thought we had asked for something really big and would take way too much time...we did get our cheese and bread and was charged 35 euros for a really small amount... I thought it was crazy...so we never ate in the dinning room till the last night... which was us and one other couple the whole night, but turned out to be a very good meal and great service...of course with only two tables....Breakfast was very good typical French breads fruit ect.. But don't set at a table set up for four or you will get a ear full... I made that mistake...I love to stay at small hotels with charm, history out of the way, off the beaten path.... but the driving back an forth every day to see the sights was too much, my advise stay closer to Amboise, and avoid the busy town of Tours, and avoid this hotel.

“Beautiful Hotel, a little piece of tranquility”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

Searched the net for a weekend retreat that I could take my girlfriend to for her birthday and found this gem.
We arrived late on the Thursday as our boat to St Malo was late. Showed to our lovely room by smiling conceirge at midnight. Awoke to a truly delightful sound of a water feature trickling away in the stunning courtyard below and proceeded to have a bountiful breakfast from the buffet table and sat in the gorgeous courtyard while being waited on by more than helpful and pleasant waitress. We then took a walk around the delightful grounds and after an hour walking through the woods we decided to rest by the amazing pool. Yes it was not greatly "heated" but we had the whole place to ourselves (in the middle of August) all day!
Dinner on the Friday was a set menu as we coincided it with a Brazilian jazz night which was lovely but dinner on the Saturday was truly superb. We like our food and were'nt disappointed. Exquisite!! (reallybnice touch was that my girlfriends menu didnt have prices on it, which may have been just as well!!!)
Also to note was that we visited the splendid wine cellar which was a real treat and very informative about the wines of the Loire Valley.
If you're looking for a restful, peaceful, tranquil getaway, you could do worse.
No, its not overly cheap but the restaurant was superb and for a one off, well worth the spend.
Great for a one off treat
Mark

“Gourmet experience”

It is the restaurant that makes this hotel special.
While the hotel is charming and has plenty of history, it is not the best country hotel we have stayed in, but the food is out of this world!
If planning on visiting the Loire Valley this is well worth a visit. Staff are welcoming and friendly and if you like to walk there are some very nice hikes available around the grounds.
Make a reservation for the restaurant and come hungry. Food is delicious and the menu very interesting.
We had a small room on the top floor and it was SO quiet and SO dark with the curtains closed that we overslept! This is a very tranquil spot.

“it was not very comfortable”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2009

The pictures make the place look gorgeous, but it's actually quite spooky inside and the rooms feel extremely old. The one good thing is the shower and bathrooms are great and clean, the bad thing is the bed which is really important when you're on vacation. The pillows were the biggest turn off, the pillows were the thinnest I've EVER seen and the bed was really uncomfortable. The bed spread, headboard, curtains, wallpaper, pillow shams were all the same print/fabric that made me feel like it was really old and dusty. The food in the restaurant is really good but the dining room feels awkward because it's only the people that are staying there, hence only 5 tables at a time in a very quiet dining room with elevator music. If you dont have to go to Tours, don't stay here because the quality is just not up to standards. I lost some sleep staying here just by being uncomfortable.

“Nice for a Splurge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2009

touring the chateau region from this base was nice. A little out of the way, no eateries or shops nearby at all, but also very quiet and restful. Staff spoke limited English. Breakfast was incredible as was dinner, but also very expensive. Rooms spacious. A very nice change of pace.
