Located near Ueno Station and not far from Asakusa historical temple area, this hotel is ideal for the budget traveller. The staff are friendly and helpful. There are books you can borrow and take up to your room for the evening, a little kitchen with a microwave and stove in the common room.
The rooms are small, but have all necessary amenities. I preferred the Japanese room to the Western one because the set-up was more charming. They give you little yakuta robes to wear after bathing or showering. The minisucle ensuite washroom comes with the cutest little tub that I soaked in after a long, tiring day of touring Tokyo. After bathing, you get out, put on the yakuta robe and make yourself a cup of green tea that the room also provides.
One advantage to this hotel is that if you plan to use Tokyo as your base and travel around Japan they let you store your luggage in a locker room, provided you come back to stay in this hotel on the way back.
We stayed in the Japanese room first. When we returned we were booked in the Western room which was not as pleasant as the Japanese one. Maybe it was just this particular room, but the TV was placed on a desk near the window in the oddest place so you couldn't relax in bed and watch tv. The spacing of the furniture was not logical in this room even though it was slightly bigger than the Japanese room. We tried to find another room, but they were all booked. Maybe this was just one odd Western room.
Still, my experience here was overall postive. I rented a bike and explored the neighborhood. There is a guy at the reception who speaks French, English and Japanese and is very helpful to guests.
