“Taste of a japanese ryokan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I was a bit concerned about finding the place given everything written about japanese system of addresses. Turned out not to be a problem at all - we were given excellent instructions. Received a really warm welcome on our arrival too.

The place was an unusual combination of the modern and traditional - like the glass box exteriors. Rooms were tatami-matted and tiny - not surprising this being Tokyo. OK too as we weren't in our room much. Everything including the shared facilities were spotless.

Loved being able to get tea, coffee, hot water at any time. They were generous too - offering coffee in the morning even though we were not having breakfast.

A lady (possibly the owner) was very helpful when we working out how to get to Haneda airport.
She suggested an express bus and rang the bus company on our behalf to check if we needed to buy tickets in advance.

Would recommend Andon Ryokan anytime. My only (tiny) complaint is I found it just a bit out of the way - particularly after a long day out and about.

“great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

I recently stayed at Andon for two four-day periods (either side of a trip to Kyoto), during my second visit to Japan. I stayed here on my first visit as well, and it is such a gem of a place that it was the ONLY place I considered going back to this time around.
The building itself is beautiful - the rooms are very small, but everything is so well-planned that it is not a problem. It is located in a friendly-feeling residential neighbourhood, close to Minowa station on the Hibiya line, from which it is very easy to get around Tokyo on foot. The staff are all over-the-top helpful and a joy to visit with. Our favorite part, though, is the very economical and delicious breakfast sets, which were always a great start to our busy days of travelling.
If you're looking for a typical western-style hotel, this place is probably not for you, but if you're open to a more authentic and unique experience of Japan, I recommend the Andon wholeheartedly!

“Beautiful place, lovely staff!”

I had a wonderful experience here. For me, Andon wasn't just a place to stay, it was a unique opportunity to learn more about Japanese culture. I found the staff incredibly friendly, the breakfasts affordable and delicious, the spa upstairs delightful. When I return to Tokyo, I will definitely stay here.

“This ryokan is a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2011

Andon Ryokan is located in one the oldest surviving residential areas of Tokyo. Two subway stops from the museums and restaurants of Ueno, a short bus ride to the Senjoji Temple and shops and restaurants of Asakusa and very accessible to all of central Tokyo. Small but well kept rooms, very friendly and helpful staff and award winning contemporary architecture. 1.2K from a beautiful paved run/walk path along the Sumida River. I will definitely return here.

Room Tip: Sign up early for the 4th floor Japanese style jacuzzi A great way to end your day.

“Very nice introduction to Tokyo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 July 2011

I booked this ryokan based on Trip Advisor, and was pleased with it. Friendly, English speaking staff who go out of their way to help you. Location is in a residential neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Rooms are small, but for the price ($79 US), more than fair. Complimentary internet, and a jacuzzi on the 4th floor. Western style shower too. One negative is that if you are not used to the Japanese bedding in a ryokan, it can be hard to get a good night of sleep. I also stayed at Ryokan Sawanoya and enjoyed sampling both properties.
