“private oasis”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2010

Tokyo is a very expensive city. I rather spend my money on shopping and food. Therefore, it was a pleasure to find that this hotel offers a private bathrooms! (At my age, I have no interest in walking down the hall and sharing a bathroom with a strangers.) After being on my feet all day, it was a pleasure to take a hot shower. Best of all the hot water pressure was high. The bathroom was very clean.... I would have no problems bringing my clean-freak parents here in the future...

I chose the Japanese style tatami room and slept like a baby. You can see the street from my room but there was no road noise. The area is very quiet.

BTW, I don't recommend that Japanese style room if you like soft beds, make sure you ask for extra futons or choose the Western style rooms with a regular mattress.

The room and bathroom are not very big. But what do you expect? It's Tokyo!

“Nice hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2010

The hotel is five minutes away from Ikebukuro station, which makes the location good. The staff are really nice and the hotel is very clean. The rooms are very small though, but we liked it there.

“Most Affordable Tokyo Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2010

Just came back from Tokyo and we stayed 8 nights here in Grand House Chang Tee. Was able to find the hotel easily from Ikebukuro Station late at night.

Direction: just head towards West Exit in the station, pass Tobu Hope Center and head for Echika (underground shopping - stretch of shops). After passing Tokyo Soup Stock restaurant, C6 exit (not West Exit escalator before this) is just on your right. After getting out into the open area, just follow the map and you will see 7-11 and arrive at Chang Tee. The whole journey will take around 10 mins walk from the time you get off the train to the hotel.

Rooms are tiny but it is ok because you don't come to Tokyo to stay in your hotel room. I personally think it can take max 3 persons in the largest room (we were provided with one and very happy with the size). For all other rooms, 2 persons will be just ok. You get free wifi (bring your own laptops). You can collect fresh new towels daily from the reception. Each room comes with attached bathroom and toilet.

You can use the kitchen in the basement to refill your water bottles or use the coin-operated washing machine and dryer for your laundry. 7-11 is just next door. There are many affordable restaurants around but we didn't eat there since we were out in other parts of Tokyo and returning to Chang Tee late at night.

What I like about the Chang Tee - definitely the affordable price tag (only 9000 Yen per night for my family of 3), attached bathroom, fresh towels everyday (not all affordable hotels provide fresh towels and many required that you bring your own towels!), helpful staff and location (Ikebukuro Station is the 2nd major station after Shinjuku and it connects you everywhere and it is also an airport-direct train station for Narita Express).

What I don't like about Chang Tee - tiny room and toilet space (still manageable for the price you pay), hard pillow, a bit of an old musky smell in the room (but it goes away after you switch on the aircon).

I have already recommended Chang Tee to my colleagues and they came back fairly satisfied with it - the price, location and above average room quality.

“terrible”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2010

Stayed at Chang Tee for 2 days and it was terrible. The room was poorly ventilated and had a stale smell. The mattress was so thin that it felt like sleeping on the floor. caused quite a bit of back and bone pain the next morning when I woke up. the room is utterly small and had little space to put our bag packs. The room we had with the private toilet is directly in the middle facing the beds. Its kind awkward design. The private bathroom is not very well kept compared to the standards of other Japan ryokans. The plus point is that it provide good wireless internet connection and the owner speaks mandarin and was very helpful.

“Great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2010

This is the first time that I have ever been to Japan and wanted to check out Tokyo which I heard is considered the Manhattan of Japan. My friends told me to check out Ikebukuro. I found this little hotel on line and considering how expensive Japan is in general, I found this place rather inexpensive. I brought my girlfriend and we both enjoyed the quality service and attention to detail provided. We checked into the Western style rooms and its still rather small compared to what we're used to but quite acceptable for Japanese standards. The location is absolutely marvelous and convenient, close to the train station. The restaurants around that area is incredible as well as the bars. The rooms are clean and kept clean everyday by the staff for our 1 wk stay. They have free wifi which was convenient b/c we had to return to our hotel frequently to check out the internet to figure out where we were heading out to.
On our last day, our flight was not until 8 pm and we were able to store our luggages in their holding area. The staff then called the car service for us to take us to the airport. Overall, it was a great experience for the price.
