I usually stay elsewhere in Tokyo but my favorite was unavailable due to waiting for the rest of my group to make reservations. So at the last minute we were fortunate to all get billeted at the same place. It may be not as well known or popular as some other local (Ikebukuro) venues of its ilk, which might account for why we were able to get all get rooms on short notice. We selected different types of rooms, some western and some Japanese so we, of course, visited one another's rooms and compared notes. I stayed in and preferred the tatami/futon option although the futon may have been slightly thinner than I am accustomed to, it was not unbearable.
The in-room "bathroom" was an interesting little twist because I'd never seen a 'collapsible' bathroom sink/pull-out toilet before, even in Japan. Truthfully, it made for a somewhat tight arrangement when trying to sit on the toilet and close the bathroom door at the same time. But I guess it beat going down the hall in the middle of the night.
There was a TV in the room but I actually unplugged it and put it on the floor out of the way so as to allow some table surface for my own use. The room was definitely only suitably sized for sleeping but we didn't come there to hang out in our rooms. There was a window but not much of a view from any of the rooms. The rooms were relatively clean and quiet. A small electric teapot shared some of the table surface but was very welcome doubling for hot water for the odd noodles cup. There was ice and minimal convenience beverages available downstairs by the communal fridge. Also in the entry area were the 2 complementary guest use computers.
I was pleased that it was easily found only 10 minutes from Ikebukuro station west exit and was on a quiet and pleasant little street. Moreover when it rained, most if the walk from the station could be made via the underground walkway and coming up at the C-6-7 exit. Also like most places umbrellas were found just by the door and use was a given during day trips. Another nicety was that the Chinese owner allowed us to leave our unnecessary for our jaunt down to Kyoto bags in the storage area until we returned a week later, even though we did not stay at the Grand House after our return!
All in all quite acceptable for the reasonable price especially for "western" accomodations!
