Had a layover in Tokyo for 2 days to visit some friends and through a friend's recommendation, stayed at the Richmond Hotel Tokyo. The room is very clean (this is standard in Japan) and very small. It has everything I needed, complete with a bath tub. Note that this is a business hotel, not ideal for a backpacker or someone with a budget. The room is good for 1-2 people. As the yen was quite low when I visited, I paid USD130 per night. I think it's not a bad rate for a business hotel. The buffet breakfast was USD10 extra.

Location is very close to the Mejiro train station. You won't get lost finding the hotel and Shibuya and Shinjuku is very accessible through the metro.

We stayed in this hotel over New Year's 08/09 in Tokyo. We booked this hotel very last minute and as such paid a premium (as is to be expected at this time of year). I found this hotel ok - nothing great, but not bad either. I would like to add that the stay probably would have been better if it was not New Year's and more restaurants in the area were open. The staff were really nice, and did their best to make our stay comfortable. Although the staff we saw had fairly limited English, they were very patient with our terrible Japanese and we got everything worked out in end. The hotel is probably about a minute's walk from Mejiro station, which is on the super-convenient Yamanote line (connects with Shinjuku and Tokyo stations). There is also a 24 hour supermarket and a McDonalds about a 30 second walk from the hotel, which was a life-saver over the New Year's period when everything else was shut.
