“Functional and well-priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

Functional. Clean. Modern. Somewhat Spartan. View of the city from room – lights were dimmer due to power restrictions in Tokyo. In the hotel also the lights were dimmer (in hallways and lobby). Twin beds were very firm but OK for us. No smoking smell detected in our room, though they supply a room freshener spray, which is unusual. Free LAN. Tea/coffee maker, fridge (empty). Two chairs, small table. Bathroom amenities – toothbrushes and paste, shower cap, comb, razor, cotton buds, hairdryer. TV was only Japanese channels but could buy a Y 1,000 pay TV ticket from the vending machines in laundry rooms on even-numbered floors. Also can buy beer, water etc. Laundry washer/dryers worked well – takes about 35 mins to wash and 60 mins to dry. Washer Y200, dryer Y100 for 30 mins and soap Y50. Were quite content with the lobby breakfast which is basic but sufficient. Rolls and croissants were hot every morning, the orange juice and coffee were acceptable (better than on the cruise ship we had just left). There were always eggs of some description and sausages as well as Japanese breakfast items.
Initially we found it difficult to find the hotel (took Narita express to Tokyo then JR train to Shinbashi station). Wandered through long underground corridors until we saw Shiodome signs. On subsequent days we realised that it was better to head above ground and find our way to the hotel on the skywalks, using the nearby Conrad Hotel as a landmark. The Villa Fontaine has no restaurant, but there are dining options in nearby office building shopping malls, some quite swish like Gordon Ramsay's restaurants. We had a light bar meal and good Belgian beer in “Drunk Bears” in the Pedi Shiodome building, and a delicious but very expensive tempura meal at “Tsunahachi Sui” in Caretta Shiodome. “La Befana”, also in Caretta Shiodome, had very good Italian-style pizzas. One interesting trip we did from Villa Fontaine was to visit the nearby Tsukiji Fish Market (great fresh sushi) and then stroll through Hama Rikyu Gardens and take the boat to Asakusa. We thought that the Shiodome location might have been inconvenient, but we found it very easy to get around. It isn't a luxurious hotel but it is good value.

Well located hotel. Plenty of transport connections. Close to good locations in Tokyo.
Rooms nice and clean and beds good. Bathrooms very nice. Breakfast style a bit basic for price but cost included.

Room Tip: Pay a bit more for the executive rooms. A bit more space well worth it.

“Just an ordinary hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

The check in was quick. Nothing special about the room but it is clean. The bed was indeed hard but it was fine for me. The hotel is about 10-15 minutes walking from JR Shimbashi Station through the underpass. Don't expect too much from the breakfast. It is very simple. Overall it was just an ordinary hotel for one night business trip.

“Rock-hard beds; smelly, noisy rooms.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

We booked this hotel because of it's proximity to Ginza and the metro, and because it had breakfast included. Should've paid closer attention to the reviews on Trip Advisor. The bed was indeed hard as a rock, literally. Both my friend who I was traveling with and I had trouble sleeping because the bed was so uncomfortable. In addition, the room stank of cigarette smoke, even though it was sold as a non-smoking room. Major pet peeve!! I could feel myself starting to get sick from the smoke smell, then when I finally crawled into bed, I discovered that the sheets smelled of smoke, too! I tried to open the door, only to be blasted with the sound of the bullet train down below. So the choice was: suffocate in the room with the window closed and live with the stench of cigarette smoke, or not sleep at all because of the loud train outside. I had to opt for the former because I was so exhausted. Just sprayed the room and the sheets with some perfume to try to mask it. The breakfast was also nothing impressive. If you're trying to pick a reasonably priced hotel, and think going with this one is a steal because breakfast is included, think again. There are tons of reasonably priced cafe's throughout the city to get a cup of coffee and a light meal in the morning that you shouldn't have a problem. Spend your money on a place where the rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable.

Room Tip: Don't stay here. I've heard the Hotel Okura, Tokyo Dome, and ANA Tokyo are much, much bette...
