I stayed in a triple with two friends for 4 nights at the Hotel Ibis. It was definitely close quarters – think inside cabin on a cruise ship. That said, we were not spending our days in the hotel room. There is too much to do in Tokyo to spend time sitting inside! While it would have been nice to have had more room for our luggage, we made do, and enjoyed the hotel. There was always at least one front desk person who spoke great English; none of us spoke Japanese.
The location of the hotel was great – a short walk from the Roppongi stop on two subway lines (Hibiya and Oedo) and the general area was comfortable and safe with plenty of dining options, Definitely try the ramen place a few doors down to the left of the hotel – it is wonderful!
On food…the hotel has a restaurant called Sabatini. We did not eat there, but each morning, we awoke to the small of garlic. As we come from Italian families, this did not bother us. However, it might be a little annoying if you are sensitive to smell.
If you are less adventurous with food, there is a Starbucks just down the road (near the ramen place) as well as many 7 –Elevens, ampms, Family Marts, even an Outback Steakhouse near the Roppongi stop of the Hibiya line. But do try to enjoy the wonderful cuisine Japan has to offer.
We didn’t have much of a view from the hotel, but that didn’t make or break the trip. Also, there was some construction going on, and we awoke to the sound of drilling, reverse signal (beep, beep, beep…) but this is a part of any city stay.
The hotel claimed to have free Internet, and there are two options. You can plug in your laptop to the cable provided in the room, or you may use one of the three terminals in the lobby. You’ll need to get a card from the front desk, and there is a 20 minute limit per day. There is no wi-fi.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to visitors who want to be near public transit, and especially to those who may not speak Japanese. The area is full of foreigners and doesn’t feel as intimidating if you don’t speak Japanese. For those who want to stay in touch with home, CNN was available in the room.
ATM warning!! We had trouble with all of our US-issued credit/debit cards. Even a Citibank issued card did not work at the Citibank ATM. The hotel will change money at a less than favorable (but “OK” if you are in desperate need…) rate. Bring cash if you are in doubt.
