I have stayed in this hotel many times visting Tokyo. The Miyako is not the newest and most flashy hotel in Tokyo but it do have style and carries it´s age with great dignity.
The fact that the hotel dates all the way back to 1979 is not visble at all. Lobby is big and spacious and offer good and comfortable seating areas that does not require you to order a drink or food. Styling is elegant contemporary and calm with a subdued color scheme in earth color which works well and both look inviting and luxurious. Service is attentive but not in anyway intrusive and staff is very helpful and always greats you with a hello and a smile. The lobby area is meticulously maintained and during my last stay I one several occaisions noticed staff cleaning various parts specific parts of the decor such as railings moldings and other small details. The only let down in the lobby is that some of the couches have upholstry thats is somewhat worn and in need of upgrading.
Check-in was quick and my SPG Gold membership was recognized and resulted in a room upgrade to higher floors of the hotel where the SPG floor is located.
The room was nicely decorated in a contemporary design finished in the same color scheme as the lobby. We found the bed to be very comfortable and the room was clean and well maintained. The view from the window faced the park outside the hotel which offered a nice green view which is nothing to take for granted in Tokyo.
There are however two let downs with the room, one is the lack of WIFI internet which means that you are confined to sit at the working desk area of the room when using internet and that using a smartphone with WIFI is impossible. The second let down of the room is the bathroom which is quite small and one thing that shows the hotels age. The joints between the tiles are discolored in some places and one tile was even cracked. The bathtube and fixtures and toilet are outdated and are starting to look a bit tired and worn. I would definetly say that the batrooms are in need of an refurbishment.
Some of the lower floors do have refurbished bathrooms but these are unfortunately done in a rather boring and somewhat design.
Breakfast can be had in three restaurants located on the lobby floor and basement. There are 3 choices, breakfast buffée, traditional japanese breakfats and a regular breakfast ala carté.
The breakfast buffée offers a good selection of both warm and cold servings. Quality of vegtables, fresh fruit pastries and other offerings where high.
I read some reviews here suggesting that the location of the hotel is a bit of. This is not something I can agree on. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus every 15minutes to Meguro Station which has access to the JR Yamanote line, from where basically all of Tokyo is within reach., for instance Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Shinagawa is just 8-15minutes away by train Also close to the hotel (about a 5minute walk) is the Tokyo Metro Shirokanedai station.
Bus ride takes about 7minutes and if you rather fancy a 15 minute walk the Shriokanedai area where the hotel is located is a pleasant are with a nice mix of small shops serving every day life and nice residential buildings as well as parks and green areas. In fact Shirokanedai is considered one of the better and more upscale areas of Tokyo popular both with Japanese and expats. The area around Meguro station offers a good selection of nice restaurants at moderate pricelevel.
The fact is in my opinion that the size of Tokyo makes it impossible to be close to everything and because of this, the area where the Miyako is located offers a good mix of closeness to various parts of Tokyo combined with the nice more tranquile surroundings and human scale of the area.
After a long day in Tokyo I often find it nice to come back to this area which is quiter and not so busy as the many other parts of the city.
In conclusion I would say that the Sheraton Miyako offers great value and a great stay in a good location. There are small issues such as the the bathrooms in need of refurbishment but regardless overall this hotel is a real gem.
Sure there are hotels that are newer and fancier such as for instance Conrad which I have also tried, or other famous hotels such as Park Hyatt and Mandarin Oriental, however these hotels come at rate usually more than twice the rate of the Miyako.
I have stayed at various hotels in Tokyo over the years and In my opinion the Miyako offer moderate pricelevel and ab outstanding quality which is hard to match without paying twice as much.
