“Great value, central location, 2 blocks from subway.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

Tokyo is expensive and I was able to get into The Granbell for under $200 a night over a holiday weekend in a premier room, and now having been there, I would consider that a great value. The hotel itself is on a small street in a neighborhood packed with restaurants, bakeries, and convenience stores, so if you need a late night snack or an ATM, you are in luck, but because it's a business area, it still quiets down after 11 pm so that you can get a good nights sleep. The hotel itself is a true boutique hotel, it's half the size of most of the giant corporate hotels that make up Tokyo, and it allows you to come and go without a lot of the pomp and circumstance of the bigger hotels, and yet the staff is still very accomodating and pleasant - they spoke perfect English. We booked a "premier" room (one step up from the standard room) and it was more than comfortable for two people with an extra large bathroom including tiled walk-in shower and giant deep soaking tub. It also had a lounge chair, desk and chair, and a king size bed, which seemed hard to find in Tokyo. The rooms and hallways are very sleek and designy even though the lobby was small and basic, with a free breakfast of several cereals, breads, coffee, and tea (no meat, but the breads were yummy). The best part of the hotel is the central location - it's two block from a subway stop that connects about 6 different routes. I'm from LA which isn't very subway friendly, and I was nervous about figuring this out and being able to get around but it couldn't have been easier. It truly was central to everywhere you want to go, from Asakusa to Shibuya to Roppongi, etc.

Room Tip: Size of rooms are more akin to rooms in urban cities and Europe - smallish. Spending for the premier...

“Good location, nice hotel, very small room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

Stayed here over the new year holiday. Location is very good, convenient to subway, and you can find various things you need in the area. Staff was helpful and spoke good English. We were warned ahead of time the room would be quite small, but we were told it was a double room. Perhaps it was, but it was truly tiny. The bed was about 1.5 times the size of a twin bed, and there were two of us. We managed, but if this was truly a double, then I do think there are couples who literally would not fit in the bed together. Bathroom was nice, with good amenities.

The only not good part was the breakfast. It was set out in the reception area, and the food was nothing remarkable. But, there were no chairs or tables to sit at while you ate. People sort of sat haphazardly on a few couches in the reception area, balancing coffee and plates of bread on their laps. With the tiny rooms, of course, we couldn't reasonably take the food there unless we wanted to eat cross-legged on the bed.

Room Tip: Confirm the size of the bed in double rooms

“Hooked me once, already went back for a second visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

I was looking for a safe, convenient, and well appointed hotel in the heart of Tokyo for a quick weekend trip - the Granbell Hotel was perfect. Room was very clean, had everything i needed for a quick weekend getaway, and the staff were amazing. the street and surrounding area is on the quieter side (more of a business/financial area), but there are shops and good restaurants close by. The noodle shop just a block away was outstanding! will be headed back here with my family next visit for sure. Easy access to/from Narita too, with the bus stopping at the Akasaka Excel Hotel three blocks away.

Room Tip: rooms on the upper floor have a bit of a view, and less noise from the street - but most all should...

“Small space with big value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 March 2011

The hotel is in a great location right by the subway and was not too hard to find, even late at night coming straight from the airport. The night receptionist spoke great english since I speak no Japanese, that was helpful! The room was very tiny; it only fit a bed for one, a desk, and chair, but it had a great bathroom. I couldn't ever figure out how to turn the tv on, but I guess that was ok. If you don't like small spaces, this hotel is not for you, but if you don't mind them this hotel offers great value and a great location.

They set up a breakfast in the reception area with pastries, coffee, toast, etc. for the guests to take back to their rooms. This was a great way to start the day without wandering out for breakfast.

The entire staff was so friendly and helpful, I would definitely recommend this to any solo or couple travelers!

“Great value for money in the heart of Tokyo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2011

This hotel is located near the Tokyo metro stop of Akasaka-Mitsuke, which is only a few minutes on the subway from Roppongi, Shibuya, and other high-end neighbourhoods. It's a three-minute walk from the metro to the hotel, and there are many decent bar and restaurant choices in the area. I found the service to be excellent and helpful. As others have mentioned, there are free water bottles in a fridge in the reception area. Breakfast was rudimentary (bread, jam, tea, coffee all served in the lobby), but the hotel doesn't advertise itself as a b+b so even that was a treat. I got a great rate on the Internet for a single room, which was tiny, but again it's to be expected -- this is Tokyo and there was no false advertising on their website. The bathroom was also tiny but somehow still spacious, with great water pressure and amenities. The bed was comfortable as was the room's temperature. There was free Internet (LAN), which was a plus. And I had a cool "Rear Window" view of the office building opposite us -- the complete urban Tokyo experience.
