“Not bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Although I'm not sure I'd stay here again, this is an overall great hotel, especially if you're watching your spending. I would give it 3.5 stars. They don't seem to jack up their rates on holidays as much as other places...if at all.

I stayed in a 2 person room with my friend with nice futons. The space was small... there was barely room for our two carry-ons. There was a nice table and tea and all that. We got our own private bathroom - tiny, efficient, and it worked so can't complain. Our bedding was comfortable and even though the pillow was super tiny, it was comfortable enough. When I say it is small, it is, but it is also kind of homey and nice - there's no closet, 3 hooks on the wall and you had to make do with your space. At least you store your shoes by the entrance and trade your shoes for slippers.

Everything works and the place is pretty much "as advertised", and the lady that runs the place is very kind, as well as a lady I bumped into who I believe cleans the rooms. There is also a quiet man, who also knows English and is at the front desk at nights, who should be more cheery, haha. :)

Why not 4 stars... The problem was that our room, the first one on your right from as soon as you check-in was 100% not sound proof, you can hear literally everything, every word from the hall way. Luckily, it's not like this is a party house, infact, by the time you reach this hotel, the neighbourhood is super quiet and you almost feel like you're not in Tokyo anymore. I got my zzz but it was kind of annoying when people come back to the hotel late and talk as they're in the hallway. If I had known I would've requested a quieter spot but I was only staying 2 nights so I stayed put. Also, there's no view from the window..I think you see some tin sheet but that's it. The tatami mat floors were cool, but the room itself, while it looked clean, was a bit dusty and made me sneeze. (My friend was okay.) I saw some other pictures people took and the rooms look bigger, so all in all, do NOT stay in the first room! :)

Hotel is an easy walk from Shibuya JR. It was extremely easy to leave on the last day and just walk to the JR, and also this place is close to Shibuya 109 and other generally awesome Japanese shopping and food. Although from Google maps it looks like the subway is closer to it, it's much easier to walk from the JR because it's literally in a straight line. From the subway it might be "closer" but you're navigating a maze of streets, going up and down, etc!

Overall if you want to book this place, I'd say it's good value.

Room Tip: choose a quieter room, further "in" the hotel the better as doors are not sound proof at A...

“At home, away from home”

Myself and 3 friends spent 9 days in Fukudaya, and it was superb. The staff made us feel at home, were constantly helpful and so warm and caring. The costing of the room was very cheap, and the quality exceptional. We loved the "traditional" experience of the futons, and slept well every night. The location is wonderful, only a short walk to the Shibuya station, which connects you to everywhere else you want to go. We had no communication issues with the staff at all. The bathroom was adequate, and the rooms were always clean. There was wi-fi available in the rooms. We had a fair bit of luggage because my friend had just finished studying, and the staff were accommodating and super helpful. Overall it was an amazing experience, and I can't wait to go back! Truly a gem in Tokyo, and I wouldn't hesitate to reccommend them to anyone.

“Good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

Small hotel in good location. Ueno area was perfect for food lovers and electric shoppers and not too expensive location. $100 per night in tokyo was not bad at all. Hotel was not to far from train station and about $20 for taxi to go to Ueno station. Room was clean and so small with sheet bed, but creepy bathroom. There is a nice sharing hot bathtub on the top floor. Restaurant at 1st floor but don't go if you don't speak japanese. Service was ok and they speak a little english. If you want to explore Tokyo with out spending a lot of money for a hotel and save money for shopping and food, you don't look further. If you need a taxi to get there so you will need to print a map from home, but don't walk it is too far and you will get lost.

We wonder if you made a mistake.
Because we are in Shibuya area, not Ueno area, and there are not a sharing hot bathtub on the top floor and restaurant in our hotel.
These are not information of our hotel.
So please check the name of the hotel you had stayed one more time.

“Tokyo Treasure”

Hotel Fukudaya is my favourite hotel accommodation in Tokyo. Shibuya and Daikanyama are both a short walk away. Fabulous eating places in the side streets, supermarket and convenience stores close by. You can get the bus outside to Shibuya station (3 minutes). Airport limousine from Haneda and Narita drop you close by at either at Cerulean Tower or Mark City. I have stayed in many different types of accomodation in Japan and prefer the comfort and friendliness of the owners. Rooms are clean and a nice touch with the rice crackers and green tea.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the Japanese style room

“A real deal and we loved it”

My family of 3 adults stopped for 2.5 days in Tokyo on our way from Montreal to Thailand as a small gesture of solidarity with the Japanese people. We booked a triple room with bath Japanese-style for 2 nights.
From Narita airport we took the Airport Limousine Bus to Cerulian Hotel in Shibuya at 18:30, we could have walked to Fukudaya hotel from there, but as it was raining and the sky was getting dark and with all the luggage, we've decided to take a taxi and it costs 740 yen as stated in the hotel web site. You better print the map and the address in Japanese of the hotel (from its web site) and show it to the taxi driver, that will definitely help him/her to locate the hotel. But afterwards, we always walk from/to the hotel to/from the Shibuya station along the Tamagawa dori (or RTE-246) and Dogenzaka dori (dori means street). The walk is pleasant and it takes about 10 to 15 mins depending on your pace and charges. My son spent a lot of time taking pictures of the crossing at the Shibuya station near the Hachio statute. You get a very good view of the crossing from the window on the 2nd floor of the Starbucks at that corner.
We arrived at the hotel around 18:40 and were greeted by 2 very lovely and helpful ladies. We got a very clean room with all 3 futons set. When we told them that we will go to Shinjuku station, they gave us the code to the door so that we can stay out late, and they volunteer to lend us the umbrellas as it kept raining as well as the maps .... The next morning we met the owner of the inn and this gentleman speaks English very well. He is also as nice as the 2 ladies.

The hotel is in a very good location. Apart from the surrounding areas of the Shibuya station, from there you can walk to Yoyogi Olympic Stadium, Yoyogi Parc, Meiji shrine, Harajuku station, Takeshita dori (the shopping street of young people), Omotesando dori, and Aoyama dori. Just the location is worth the price. The owner and staff are all friendly, nice and helpful, asnd the room is kept clean. As their first visit to Japan, my wife and my son really enjoyed the stay in this hotel and we would certainly come back again.
