“Heart of Tokyo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 May 2009

I was aksed by a Friend of mine to block a hotel for his elderly parents visitng Tokyo. I selected Hotel East 21, in Tokyo just that it should be easy for them to get access throught out the City.

Though the trip was almost 3 weeks, I just blocked for the first week just to make sure that they might like the hotel. Finally it ended that they stayed all the 3 weeks in East 21. The main reasons were hospitality, Service and the price was reasonable.

The Hotel service give them a good feeling of the Hospitality of Japan. I feel for eldlery tourists visitng Tokyo this should be one of the best choice.

  • Liked — Hospitality
  • Disliked — May be they should do more marketing, because many of them dont know the property.

“Typical Japanese business hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2009

Travelled to the hotel for a business meeting in February. The hotel is located in Toyo-Cha about a 7 or 8 minute walk to the Metro station.

When you walk in the hotel lobby is nice enough with a big bar in the front and the desk at the back wall. Check in went well. You need to ask for internet access at this point as they will have someone bring up a modem to hook up in your room. This is the cheapest internet that I have ever paid for. It was somewhere around $3 a day which is less than a quarter of what it usually is in North America.

As with many Asian hotels the rooms are quite small as is all the things within it. The bed is a small single that was long enough for my 6' frame. The like extremely firm beds in Asia and this was no exception. No such concept of pillow top or Heavenly bed here. Luckily I like firm beds so I had no issue.

The work desk is also very small which makes it hard to lay things out. I had my laptop on it and combined with the modem they provide it doesn't leave a lot of room. The internet connection was one of the best I've ever used. Latency and delays were non-existent. I used my soft phone capability on my laptop to phone back through my company phone system and the people on the other end thought I sounded like I was next door and the delay was not noticable.

The washroom was small but still had enough room to move around. As with many Japanese toilets this one had a heated seat and a bidet function. I personally don't like warm toilet seats as it leaves a very negative connotation in my head so I looked to find out how to turn that portion off. In order to do so you have to lift up a flap on the back right of the controls that are on your right. Just be careful not to turn on the bidet!

There are multiple restaurants and bars in the hotel. Nothing is cheap as you would expect in Tokyo. The restaurant in the lobby the left of the check in is where they had a good buffet for breakfast each morning with North American and Japanese items. All were excellent quality so we had breakfast there each day.

We also saw the bar on the top floor but drinks are expensive as you are paying for the ambience and not the drink really. We also tried the top floor Japanese restaurant for lunch. We had a traditional Japanese bent lunch and it was quite good except for a few things I wasn't really sure what they were. Also quite expensive.

The TCAT bus which brings you to and from the airport picks up directly from this hotel and you can pick up tickets downstairs. It appears this hotel is the last stop so you go directly from the hotel to the airport on this bus. Very convenient compared to coming in from the airport using the TCAT which brings you to the station and you have to take a 10 minute cab ride to the hotel.

All in all it is a good hotel. Only problem you will find here and most places in Tokyo is the porportion of people who smoke is very high compared to North America but like I said, it is not isolated to this hotel.

“Model of consistency”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2008

I have stayed at the Hotel East 21 nearly 20 times over the last 6 years and is is always clean, well staffed and quite spacious for Japanese hotels. Good breakfast buffet. The refurbished outdoor pool is open now but you need to pay to use it, as with the health club. This hotel is a great value.

“good hotel, but quite far from central tokyo”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2007

We came from Osaka by shinkansen and arrived at the JR Tokyo station, which was very far from the hotel. The subway will come in handy for trips to Central Tokyo and other far places in Tokyo. However, nearest subway stop (Toyocho on the Tozai Line) is still about a 7 to 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Rooms are big, spacious. Beds are a little small but comfortable. And they come with two pillows! The A/C in the room was quite warm though. Best to call housekeeping and have it fixed.

Bathrooms are a little small but serves its purpose. It also comes with its own pump container for shampoo, conditioner and body soap. They're very generous when it comes to towels.

Staff are quite helpful but there are still a lot who cannot speak English but can only understand. It's best to talk to the Front Desk staff or the Asst. Manager if you need something.

East 21 Tokyo is also a Disney partner hotel so shuttle to Disney Resort is free. Best to reserve as soon as you arrive at the hotel because shuttle tend to fill up quickly in the morning. They also provide shuttle to the nearest subway station but you will have to make reservations. Shuttle reservations can be made with the concierge. Airport limousine buses also stop here so it's pretty convenient if you don't have a ride to and from the airport. Although if you're leaving very early in the morning, it can be a bit of a hassle (which we experienced) since the first trip leaves at 7:30 in the morning.

Our reservation didn't include daily breakfast but we didn't worry because there are several places that serve breakfast right outside the hotel. And there are other breakfast places in the surrounding area. There is also an am/pm convenience store outside the hotel, where you can get lots of cheap breakfast items.

It's a pretty good hotel, not my first choice since I would have preferred staying near Central Tokyo. But if you prefer a quieter place that's still near Central Tokyo, then I would recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — comfortable beds, breat surrounding area
  • Disliked — quite far from Central Tokyo

“very nice, but out of the way...”

This is a really nice hotel. All the front desk staff speak English very well and are nice. The rooms for being in Japan are roomy, but not exactly spacious. I stayed on 3 different floors while at this hotel and can say that the rooms are all pretty much a like. The pool was closed when I was there, but it was still maintained nicely, with bushes and flowers. The beds are hard and uncomfortable, but that is typical of Japanese hotels. The front staff ordered my taxi's for me and made sure the driver knew where to take me which was very nice, The train station is about 10-15 minutes away, but it takes longer to get there in the morning as the sidewalks are extremely crowded, That was the one thing that I didn't like at all about this hotel; it's location. It's kind of out of the way and there's not much to do in that area. You have to be willing to take a taxi or brave the trains to get anywhere poplular. That's ok, but not for me. There are a few family restaurants below the hotel along with a coffee shop and a really big gorcery store and a couple of convenience stores as well. Overall it's a nice hotel and I would stay there again if I had to, but I like others better because of the location issue.

  • Liked — Nice hotel with a nice price.
