I stayed at the Ryumeikan early November 2011 for 2 days in a Forus B (Success) room.
The Ryumeikan is just across the JR Tokyo Station (literally and figuratively) and is therefore only 3 minutes on foot from the Yaesu North Exit of Tokyo Station. This is very convenient if you are taking the N’EX (Narita Express) or the Airport Limousine buss from the airport. You won’t have to take a taxi or subway to reach the hotel since the hotel is just across the station. In addition if you need to take the Shinkansen you are also just across Tokyo Station. The hotel is also right around the corner (literally and figuratively) from a Nihonbashi station exit/entrance.
Once in the building you need to take the elevator to the 15th floor where the lobby (and check-in) is. There is nobody to welcome you or help you with your luggage on the ground floor though, not a problem since the elevators are right beside the entrance of the hotel.
Check-in was quick and the staff always polite (you’re in Japan after all). I was informed/reminded of my restaurant reservations as well.
My room , a Forus B (Success) room, was small (any room in Tokyo will be small) but it’s wasn’t cramped at all. The layout was very efficient even though there was a double bed, desk, and couch in the room. The room looked new and is quite modern.
I was actually surprised about the free amenities in the room: slippers, internet, Nespresso machine, bottled water, toothbrush, razor, and lots of other toiletries. I wish chain hotels would offer these amenities as standard as well (yeah, I think I will have to keep on dreaming though)…
The bathroom does not have a tub (expected for such a small room) but came with a shower booth that had a big rain showerhead. Fantastic was to start or end your day (water pressure was great btw)! The toilet was a Toto washlet (a super fancy toilet) that had an electric lid and (heated) seat, automatically flushed, front/rear washing, and dryer among other things. There is also a good sized sink with enough counterpace.
The bed was also interesting. It lulls you to sleep or wakes you up with the use of a vibrations in the bed, lights, and sounds… Very interesting, relaxing/soothing, and effective.
I only had breakfast (a buffet) once in the hotel (the restaurant’s name is Hanagoyomi and is on the 15th floor) and it was overwhelming. It’s an extensive and very heavy breakfast which could probably pass as lunch.
The concierge was very always helpful in answering any question, directions, places, stores, anything.
Checkout was quick and efficient as well.
Next time when I will be in Tokyo I will definitely stay at the Ryumeikan again since it is a very good base when visiting Tokyo.
