I was on a business trip to Tokyo for 5 days, and was initially planning on staying at ANA Intercontinental, but as they were booked out, chose the Excel Hotel, Akasaka, Tokyo. The hotel was nice with quintessential Tokyo style compact rooms with all the necessary amenities in the room (except an iron, for which one needs to call them in). The kit in the room is also fine. In true Japanese style, the service is very good. The internet in the room is through a LAN connection (no wi-fi) which could be painful when you want to relax at the end of a busy day at work.
The location is very central, especially with the Akasaka-mitsuke Subway station(Ginza line) a stone's throw away from the hotel, making it convenient to travel across the city.
The breakfast, which was included in the price, was a large spread, but being a vegetarian I obviously had limited choice. Even then, I always left satisfied with a good collection of international bakery products, variety of cut fruits and vegetables.
My Pain area, and this is the one that sweeps off ALL the good things mentioned above, is when I had to make the payment. They do not accept any MASTERCARD Credit cards (3 of mine they didnt accept) , although on day 1 they had swiped my card for checking (and due to some reason, some money was also debited from my account, which they refused to believe!). Finally , because I had a local contact, he really went out of his way and paid for it through his Japanese card to sort out the issue at the moment, but I left very very unimpressed. At the end of the day, however good the hotel can be, this hygiene issue makes it really a painful experience.
Room Tip: Be sure to have an AMEX card first!
