“good if you choose the right room,”

The hotel is good to reach by Limousine bus from Narita Airport. The rooms can be quite small if you do not choose a full double. Internet is free and the location is good and close to Akasaka business district. There is a charge for early check in - As most of the european flights get in to Tokio very early - you need to pay an extra if you want to get into the room before 2 pm. If you book the ANA you do not have to pay this! I did not go for the breakfast as there was always a huge line at the restaurant. There are better and much cheaper alternatives for breakfast very close to this hotel

“Not really for the tourist”

I stayed in this hotel for three nights on a business trip. All my expenses were paid so I can't really comment on value for money.
The hotel rooms were adequate but there were no non-smoking rooms available and the smell was terrible. Wish I'd thought to ask for non-smoking. The bed was extremely firm, the pillows good and the window opened so I could get fresh air. The tv had many Channel's but only one English one (BBC news) so a bit boring. you could buy movies if you wanted.
There is free wifi in the lobby for only 10 minutes very 3 hours. There are computers you can use for ¥100 for 15 minutes. I found the taff helpful but their English was not great.
There is a 7/11 downstairs and ATM in there too. The hotel is not in a shopping district but rather a restaurant district. If you cross the road and walk behind the buildings that line the street you'll find the streets teeming with people looking for dinner.
The subway is very close. Taxi's readily available and a Starbucks along the street a bit. There is also a Hooters in the building.
If you are looking for a fun evening go to the Ninja restaurant which is on the corner near the hotel.

“Hotel Recommended For Business Trip Only”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

Stayed in this hotel for 4 nights... Very boring location with only food eateries opposite the hotel.. Metro is just across the road and you can easily hop into the Metro to town for some shopping and sightseeing.. Almost like a dead town at night.. Rooms are small but clean and acceptable.. Would not really recommend holiday makers to stay in this hotel due to the location..

“Overall good but harrowing experience for payment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

I was on a business trip to Tokyo for 5 days, and was initially planning on staying at ANA Intercontinental, but as they were booked out, chose the Excel Hotel, Akasaka, Tokyo. The hotel was nice with quintessential Tokyo style compact rooms with all the necessary amenities in the room (except an iron, for which one needs to call them in). The kit in the room is also fine. In true Japanese style, the service is very good. The internet in the room is through a LAN connection (no wi-fi) which could be painful when you want to relax at the end of a busy day at work.
The location is very central, especially with the Akasaka-mitsuke Subway station(Ginza line) a stone's throw away from the hotel, making it convenient to travel across the city.
The breakfast, which was included in the price, was a large spread, but being a vegetarian I obviously had limited choice. Even then, I always left satisfied with a good collection of international bakery products, variety of cut fruits and vegetables.
My Pain area, and this is the one that sweeps off ALL the good things mentioned above, is when I had to make the payment. They do not accept any MASTERCARD Credit cards (3 of mine they didnt accept) , although on day 1 they had swiped my card for checking (and due to some reason, some money was also debited from my account, which they refused to believe!). Finally , because I had a local contact, he really went out of his way and paid for it through his Japanese card to sort out the issue at the moment, but I left very very unimpressed. At the end of the day, however good the hotel can be, this hygiene issue makes it really a painful experience.

Room Tip: Be sure to have an AMEX card first!

“Not suitable for long stays”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

I found the rooms small and boring. I was here for a week on business so some nights wanted to relax in the room which I couldn't do without wireless or English speaking TV. Have to request an iron, hangers everything you need basically isn't kept in the room. Bathrooms were clean but looked as though they weren't originally there and erected at a later stage, felt like a plane bathroom. Aircon wouldn't cool the room down in the middle of summer.
Didn't feel this catered to a business need at all.
Staff are friendly but with very very limited English. Try telling them the iron they just brought you is broken!
Would like to try somewhere else next time. This really is a three star hotel and would be suitable for short time travellers who spend no time in the room.

Room Tip: Only for short term busy travellers
