“A great place, awsome views, wonderful staff, but a little hard to find at night.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

We made the mistake of arriving at night with a rental car and had a hard time finding the hotel. If you stay on the main road along the shoreline and enter the town, you will blink and miss it, which we did. So after a u-turn, driving several miles back along the coast, and after asking numerous passers-bys where it was, we finally figured out that this tiny little cobblestone street on the left as you face the monument is the street. They said they had parking, but the 3 spots they had were taken. The lady who checked us in didn't speak english so after much frustration we ended up parking the car along the waterfront and walked up 6 flights of stairs to get back up to the main street. I just wished they had given us a better map of the area, but if it was daylight it would have been much easier! On the plus side, the room was very nice with a view of the ocean and we slept really well. The breakfast was great and the two daytime staff who both spoke english were excellent and very helpful. It was a little pricey at 135 Euro. The bathroom shower needed updating and the ceiling in the bathroom needed to be painted, but the view was great and I think I would go back.

“You'd go back for the view alone”

We stayed here as the 4th leg of our Basque road trip. Getaria is a charming little town, if a little expensive. Some of the restaurants are utterly outrageous, with prices of £15 upwards for a tiny tuna salad. I wouldn't pay that in West London for such mediocre food. The Kaia restauraunt on the other hand, whilst expensive, was fantastic.

The hotel itself is right in the old town, so if you are driving you will need to pay for the garage to store your car. This needs to be booked in advance. The hotel staff area mixed bag. The chap on reception who may well have been the owner was very kind and friendly, however the staff who served us breakfast were surly and unhelpful. They seemed to prefer standing around and nattering to each other whilst leaving tables uncleared or dealing with such inconveniences as asking if you’d like coffee or not.

As for the room, we paid more for a “Special Seaview” and boy was it worth it. The view though the huge window was pure bliss, as you can see form my pics, and we fell asleep each night to the sound of the sea. Living in central London and usually dropping off to the sound of sirens and music, this made a welcome change! My only complaint would be the bathroom, which was some way below the standard of the room itself. The shower was weak, and the bathroom generally looked a little tired,

As per the title of my review however, despite this not being as perfect as some have suggested, I think it represented pretty good value and would return just to see the view again.

“Dream stay in Getaria”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2010

We splurged on a deluxe room with an ocean view - which was 118 euros including breakfast. Room 25 was a suite with a separate room that had a couch. The room was large and the bathroom quite nice. The common area of the hotel was incredibly decorated - you could tell the owners had put alot of personal care into the place. The owner and his wife worked the reception and breakfast when we were there. They were very helpful providing us information on the area. The terrace was perfect to enjoy a late night drink and listen to the waves. Breakfast was included in the price - it was the typical hotel spread with a nice assortment of cheese and meats. I really have not one negative thing to say about this place or even a recommendation for improvement. This place was perfect.

One note about Getaria in late September: it's VERY quiet. Most of the pintxos bars in town were closed in the evening and half were closed during the day. We took a bus to nearby Zarautz where it was a ittle more lively.

“Loveliest place I have ever stayed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

We stumbled across this hotel on trip advisor and spent 3 wonderful days there. The owners were very helpful, the location was incredibly romantic and everything about the hotel from space, views, comfort, location, food was wonderful. Our visit coincided with the Basque festival so we had a great day in the town drinking cider, eating bbq sardines and enjoying the festivities. We will definitely go back there on our next trip to Spain.

“LOVED IT!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2010

We booked 2 rooms for 2 nights at the end of May and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Mikel at the desk is knowledgable and a delight to interact with and both sytles of rooms available at the hotel are quite nice. The seaview rooms have a spectacular view perched on a cliff over the water but the rooms facing toward town are more spacious, well appointed and very comfy, too. The tasty breakfast menu is extensive and features fresh fruit, pastries.cold cuts, etc. This quaint fishing village is very picturesque and certainly less touristy then San Sebastian and just a 20 minute drive away. Getaria also has a number of fine local basque restaurants featuring fresh fish being cooked on the ourdoor grill to entice you inside. One word of caution: follow their directions to the hotel explicity because the one-way narrow streets can be confusing to navigate. Remember their B & B is down near the water and not in the hills above town. Also, if driving, call ahead and take advantage of their secure parking nearby for 10 Euros. Highly recommended!
