“Big disappointment”

We stayed at the Saiaz because we had heard Getaria was charming and because Elkano is literally 2 minutes away. However, I wouldn't go to Getaria for charm -- other places along the Basque coastline were much more charming, to our taste at least -- and I definitely wouldn't stay again at the Saiaz. For a start, it's simply a rather soulless hotel, with very plainly decorated rooms and motelly bathrooms, costing more than you need to pay in the region. Our room also smelled terrible! When we first walked in, it stunk of some kind of horribly strong and unnatural cleaning product. We opened the windows and drove to Bilbao for the day, expecting the room to have aired out by the time we returned -- but evidently the room was completely impregnated with the smell (enough to give you a headache). We complained to the receptionist in the late afternoon on our return. She came to the room and agreed the smell was bad but couldn't move us to another as they were full. We were given a free breakfast, which didn't really seem sufficient compensation given how off-putting the smell was, taking away any romance from the night. Our 150 euro smelly, charmless room was a big disappointment. Dinner at Elkano was fantastic, though!

Dear bpch, first of all, let us thank you for your review.
We strongly take into account your opinion, and welcome your suggestions in order to improve.
Please note that the product whose smell made your experience at the Saiaz so dissapointing has never been used again. If you are coming around, we would be very pleased to welcome you in order to have a pleasant experience.

“Thoroughly recommend!”

We stayed for three nights, with our two teenagers (14 and 19). The hotel was traditionally funished with great style and taste. Families were welcomed but the hotel retained a very peaceful atmosphere. We booked room 22 (a double room with the floor to ceiling windows looking over the sea) . I agree it is not huge, but it was stylishly, furnished with a good bathroom/shower. It was very relaxing to sit and look out over the sea, read a book ... Our other room was a bigger, twin bedded room (34) on the cobbled pavement side of the hotel which was again well furnished, with original stone walls. We booked a space in the hotel garage (2 spaces) just along the road. It's pretty tight getting in and out but we felt it was worth the very reasonable additional cost. Breakfast was fine, again overlooking the sea. The staff were very helpful, especially with places to eat. We would definitely recommend 'Politena' a tapas bar in the upper town, a very short walk from the hotel. A really good choice of pinchos, friendly and good value. It's not open every day, so check ahead. For days out we would recommend visiting the Guggenheim art museum in Bilbao, and spending a day in Pamploma

Room Tip: For a great sea view - room 22

“A gem of a hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

Cannot say enough good things about the hotel. The location above the sea provides wonderful views. The rooms are very nicely appointed and the staff (especially Miguel) could have not been more helpful. The town is charming and the seafood restaurants within a 5 minute walk are superb (as the town if Getaria is a working fishing port). Parking is a bit of a challenge, but we always found a spot. I agree that it would help to have a GPS. Also, do visit the Balenciaga museum right across the main road from the hotel at the top of the escalator!

“What a view!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

This is an old castle completely renovated by the owners, eclectic decoration but perfectly harmonious, a masterpiece. We had the 2 story suite, with a magnificent view of the cantabric through the panoramic windows at the push of a button, every morning. The town is a marvel in itself. Very close to San Sebastian. You could have in Getaria the most delicious fish (albeit simplest) you had ever tried. The secret is in the time from the ocean to your palate, and believe me it's not long in Getaria. Just make sure you have gps or get detailed directions.

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2011

We stayed at this hotel in June 2011 and loved it. The location was perfect for exploring the Basque region, close to Bilbao, San Sebastian, Hondarribia and the beach. The Seaview room was amazing, so relaxing and a fantastic view. Breakfast was typical European - bread, cheese, cereal, coffee and juice, enough to start your day. But we have to give credit to the fantastic staff, they were booked so we changed our dates so we could stay there (due to te great reviews) and they found space for us. Aniana responded to our emails quickly when trying to book and Michael was so knowledgeable about the area and made several suggestions for sightseeing which we followed. You can definately tell he loves his job and enjoys helping his guests. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Seaview room is definately worth it !
