We stayed at Las Calas after booking a walking holiday with Inntravel. The hotel is quietly located a few kilometres frim San Mateo, first impressions were what a charming place, however the owner's welcome was incredibly abrupt really more interested in making sure we checked in quickly and went straight to the dining room for dinner at 7pm.
The rooms are good, as we had expected for a rural hotel, clean, quiet and comfortable.Breakfast was also good, freshly squeezed Orange juice, cheese, meats, fresh bread, yoghurts and lots more.
We ate dinner on our first night, which really was disappointing, soup, pork with boiled potatoes and a cream pudding. It could be so good with a little more effort and imagination, we did not expect gourmet food but just well cooked and seasoned local food! Also you have to have dinner at 7pm, not later.
The area is fantastic for walking with amazing countryside, flowers, birdlife and really this compensated for the inflexibility of the hotel.
There are restaurants in nearby San Mateo but opening times seem to be a bit vague particularly for dinner midweek. We did find an amazing bodega restaurant in El Madrional called Restaurante Martell, well worth visiting with its own wine cellar and good food and service.
We would return to LasCalas, but definately would not eat there.
