“Excellent service, great location, okay rooms.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We arrived at the Tryp Gran Sol at 6 am and didn't expect to be able to check in. Although they weren't expecting us so early they quickly arranged for a room. The view was incredible - if I remember right, we were on the 24th floor and could see all over the city, the harbour and the sea. It was amazing. The furniture was a little outdated and there were some strange spots on the ceiling and the walls, but the room seemed fairly clean. In the bathroom there was little space, everything seemed a little narrow in the hole room.

The AC was a little loud at times but fulfilled its purpose - it was great having a cool room in the summer heat of Alicante! The location of the hotel is perfect, it's only a minute away from the harbour and about a 5 minute walk to the beach. The castle is also close by (about 15 minutes to the elevator) and worth a trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on one of the upper floors (20 and up) - the view is worth it!

“Great location but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We stayed at this hotel at the end of October. We were there for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race. We were hardly in the hotel except to sleep. I agree with the other reviews about the rooms being very dated and needing major upgrades. The views however were spectacular, and the locations was about as good as I could imagine for Alicante. Carla, who worked at the front desk was about as sweet a person as you will find. Extremely helpful and pleasant, and a big asset to the hotel.

Room Tip: Higher floors, view of the marina. Corner rooms have best view, but are smallest. Bring earplugs (ev...

“Great location and good sized rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

I too was pleasantly surprised by this hotel as I read some reviews a couple of days before I left and was a bit concerned. The rooms do need a good refurb as they are tired and dated. However we had a seperate sitting room and bedroom with great views of the beach and the castle. It is situated about 5 mins from the beach and is very central for lots of restaurants and bars. Despite its central location it's not noisy so we got a good nights sleep every night.

The buffet breakfast is very good, lots of choice - even for vegetarians. Like a lot of hotels the coffee is not great, really strong. But they do have a coffee machine by the door where you can get a really nice expresso style coffee.

The staff were very friendly and speak good English. It was interesting to note that many of the people staying there were native Spanish speakers.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view.

“A pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Having booked this hotel whilst at the Spain v Scotland match, and read some of the earlier reviews, I was expecting a noisy experience in the heart of Alicante, right next to the beach. I was therefore delighted to find a room on the 21st floor with lovely views over the sea, and well away from the noise on the front.

The hotel itself is a little dated, but perfectly comfortable and with a decent breakfast, all for €75/night.

Ask for a room on a high floor, and this is a great choice in Alicante.

“Violence against women”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011 via mobile

Ignorance concerning violence against women in a hotel is not tolerable.

After having announced at around 3 am to the reception that a women in the neighbor room is most likely being beaten up, the receptionist did not take more action but calling to the room - despite the direct suggestion to call the police. A talk with the reception manager and the day-time receptionist on the following day resulted in very diplomatic answers. My favorite no-go arguments were:
- only one person was registered for that room what leads to the fact that the reception cannot do anything about it
- what happens in a room is private

For me it is not reasonable to stay in a hotel that deals in this way with violence against women.
