“You get what you pay for”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Spent a week here late Jan/early Feb.

A bit surprised to read some the recent positive reviews, we found the hotel to be a bit disappointing.

Good points were the hotel and rooms were always kept scrupulously clean. Staff generally friendly and helpful.

Not so good points were that our room (in Block C) was very tired looking. The furniture and fittings had clearly seen better days (threadbare settee, cracked sink in bathroom for example). I don't know if all rooms would be the same, some blocks seemed to look a bit more modern from the outside.

Maybe we're just fussy eaters but we thought the food was very limited and done on a very low budget, although to be fair we always found something to eat. The all-inclusive wines and spirits were also the cheapest of the cheap, but the beer was ok.

The evening entertainment in the bar was nearly always a bit shambolic apart from one night when they had a really good Barry White tribute act. The problem was mainly due to the poor acoustics in the room but also the fact that everything was repeated in five or six languages. This all meant that it was very difficult to know what was going on half the time.

It wasn't helped by the leader of the 'animacion' team (a short guy in a white suit and black curly hair) whose incessant use of the word 'shoop' when he wanted your attention, really got on my wick after a short while.

But the sun shone most of the time and when I consider what we paid for our week, I don't suppose it was too bad. But I wouldn't hurry back.

“Nice break, very good value”

The hotel was very nice. The room was very large with a nice balcony sea view. Furniture was basic but functional. The food was really amazing, fresh, plenty of meat, fish, desserts, fruit... Excellent breakfasts, coffee and beer as well. The restaurant staff was very friendly and also very funny. The animations were very good (we were surprised) but mostly only in Spanish. We were disappointed just with the room cleaning. Nobody changed towels in our room whole week!

Room Tip: Definitely rooms with balcony.

“Fantastic value hotel!”

The reception area and restaurant were excellent but the rooms, although clean, could do with renovation work now. The food is fantastic, always fresh, plenty of fish and meat and a good choice to suit everyone. The drinks on offer are amazing - about 30 bottles of spirits/liquers to help yourself from besides the usual wine and beer on tap. Sangria good as well and a different cocktail offered every evening.

The animation team work so hard with games during the day. If you fancy your hand at archery, shooting, horse-shoes, etc. then there's plenty to do or if you just want to lounge on a sunbed, the bar pool is at hand for regular refills.

For what we paid, we had fantastic value for money and it was a very good relaxing holiday. There is not much in the resort and it is very hilly but a local bus will take you to Las Gigantas which is more interesting with a harbour, but again, very hilly. However, this does seem to have been taken over by the Brits and we were hard pressed to hear a Spanish voice at times!

Room Tip: A trip to the mountains and forest and the north of the island is well worth it.

“Barcelo ?? well just about.”

Just returned from a months stay, so long enough to form an opinion. Hotel is situated on top of a steep hill almost half a mile from nearest beach and shops. The return journey almost requires almost athletic skills due to the incline and the hotel is certainly not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. The Apartments while being spacious are shabby and in need of painting and refurbishment, some of the furniture would sell well on the Antique road show. The main hotel areas are kept very clean. The staff are excellent, friendly and work extremely hard to please.
Food is only average but you can always find something to eat. This chef loves GOAT its on the menu quite frequently. This is one of the busiest hotels I have ever stayed in with comings and goings 24/7 so breakfast & evenings can sometimes be a problem finding a table and I personally hate queing for my table or food.
Two points I should mention. The hotel operates a first child free and second at 50% so this encourages families. Now don't get me wrong I have nothing against kids, I was one myself once, but you get to a stage where kids screaming, crying, running around and shouting becomes too much. Another disturbing point is that in their wisdom the Hotel has decided its cheaper to put 38/45 bottles of spirits/drinks on a help yourself basis than employ a barman. Now this obviously leads to alcohol abuse. So if you want to get plastered every night with as much as you can drink then this place is for you. Unfortunately its not everyones scene I believe there should be some control as in other AI I have stayed in so the barman knows when someone has had enough .This is a recipe for disaster.
Be aware of the AI tag. If you rent a car to park it 3euro,tennis 5euro,use the safe3euro,use Jacuzzi 3euro,Internet 6euro hairdryer2euro all per day. So if you stay for 14 days add another 294euros to your bill. Your probably better off booking a 4star Hotel and getting nearly all this for free.
This is a 3star no more no less and just about justifies the brand ' Barcelo ' or perhaps
should be called the 'Barcelo Extra '

Room Tip: Block B is above the dining room/reception definately the quietest on site. In the summer months the...
