“Restaurant and service a bad let down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2011

Arrived late Monday afternoon. Only a small reception desk that was overwhelmed. Asked about dinner booking - "no problem" we are told. Arrive for dinner at 8 - restaurant closed. "Can have a meal in the bar through there." Small bar with low [coffee] tables set with place settings. No waiting staff in evidence but the bar itself is busy. Impossible to sit to eat meal in comfort at such a low table seated in a large armchair. Complain and leave to go to local restaurant across the road. Staff disinterested. What a disaster that otherwise spoilt a potentially excellent hotel - clean, comfortable in the superior rooms. But beware, many of the rooms seem buried in a warren of floors in the levels below the reception with an unreliable lift service.

Room Tip: Better rooms in hotel are very good. Convenient for Britanny Ferries port - only 10 minutes.

“Perfect stay for access to Bilbao”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2011

This very comfortable hotel was the perfect location for very quick and easy access to Bilbao for our 3 night stay. Some might be disturbed by the trains which run next to the hotel but we chose the hotel for the direct train access into the city. We paid 10 Euros for a multi purpose ticket which allows travel on buses, trains, trams and the Bilbao Funicular ( worth the effort for the spectacular view) for very reasonable rates. We used the ticket for 2 days and still had almost half the credit left. Trains run every ten minutes or so and it's a very quick journey to Abando in the Centre of Bilbao. We were happy to pay the very secure parking costs: (13.50 E per day) ...peace of mind for 3 days. On arrival take the quite sloping drive down( RHS of hotel) to the underground car park, if you press the wall button the receptionist will open the gates for you to drive in and access to reception is signposted.
Booking on line was very simple and the price of 60 Euros seemed very reasonable. The extra cost of 14 Euros for breakfast seems high but the buffet is superb, amazing quality and variety.....no need for lunch later!. The room was very comfortable and spacious, ensuite excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is a Tourist Office in the grounds of the hotel... very helpful staff. One drawback is achieving an evening meal. The hotel restaurant is only open at weekends and nearby restaurants in Santurtzi seem very expensive. Research beforehand if you can, we walked for far too long before settling for a fast food outlet. Try opposite direction to Portugalete. We decided to stay late in Bilbao and eat there. Plenty of trains... get a timetable from Abando. The station in Santurtzi is unmanned. You get the multi trip ticket from a machine. All in all a perfect place for Bilbao when travelling by car....let the train take the strain.
We spent most of the 2 days in The Guggenheim and Museo des Bellas Artes ( Free on Wednesdays!) We can thoroughly recommend lunch at the Cafe in Guggenheim but you need to book a table. The main restaurant was closed .

Room Tip: Rooms away from traintrack will be quieter.

“The hidden extras?”

Quite a gem of a hotel not far from the ferry to Portsmouth at a very reasonable 62 Euros, however the parking was a further 15 Euros!!! Stayed in a twin room in the new part of the hotel which had large clean comfortable rooms and excellent bathroom. The airconditioning only blew out warm air (despite complaining) and you could not open the window as the Railway station was underneath the window - too noisy. Breakfast was of a good quality costing 13 Euros and the free WiFi is only for 30 minutes and only in the Lobby. All in All, quite good but like the low cost airlines, the price keeps escalating.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the railway station.

“Confusing but luxurious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2010

A luxurious hotel on a hillside just outside Bilbao, externally very attractive and cunningly built into the side of the hill. Convenient for the port and the historical transporter bridge (15 minute walk). It’s 5-10 minutes walk to the train or metro stations, so very easy to get into the city without the driving and parking hassle. RENFE was €4 round-trip to the city center. To get to the Guggenheim Museum, you either get off at Moyua station and it’s then a 5 – 10 minutes walk or take it to Abando and walk along the river bank.

Once we found it, our room was great. The floor numbering system is bizarre, compounded by the fact that there are multiple lifts to get confused by. Signage to the parking was diabolical. Overall, it is a very strange layout indeed. Our bed was huge – at least king-size – and very comfortable. Shower and bathroom were exemplary. The room was quite close to the local train line bit this did not really disturb us.

If you want to go out in the evening for food or drink, walk east towards Portugalete rather than Santurce. We struck very lucky with tapas and wine in one of the side streets. We also found great coffee and bread in the same direction the next morning (next to the DIA supermarket).

One more tip, if you have a few minutes to spare in Bilbao, visit the Siete Calles in the old town for an interesting walk around.

“Very good location for crisis!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2010

Travelling overland from Malaga to connect with the Portsmouth ferry (flights all off due to volcano crisis) booked this by internet as was close to Bilbao port. Arrived about 10 pm, restaurant and bar closed for a function but food available through room service and staff took orders for drinks.
Lovely room - comfy bed, beautiful well-equipped bathroom (even fluffy robes!), multi channel TV, tea making facilites - for 75 euros not including breakfast.
Guests at function VERY noisy - had to call reception at 1 am to ask them to do something about the racket.
