We went to Castello di Vicarello for a wedding. Lovely setting, amazing views, beautiful place. However, whilst the staff were all lovely, the management was borderline rude, unhelpful, very reluctant to admit mistakes or apologize when some were made. We were supposed to check in at 11am, but when we arrived at 11.30, they were not ready for us, and made us carry our luggage back down the hill to our cars. We were asked to wait until 1pm for our rooms to be available - all the while without any offer of refreshments. When our friends' children said they were hungry at lunchtime, the parents were told that "nobody had told them people would want lunch" and they couldn't provide anything! Eventually they offered some cheese and bread, which when our friends checked out they had the cheek to attempt to charge 80 Euros for! Three of the rooms had no hot water, but when told, the management's reply was "This has never happened before" and they made no attempt to fix the problem. The food for the wedding dinner was appalling - my first plate of lamb had to be sent back as it was just gristle, and the replacement plate was full of bones - in fact I cracked a tooth on a piece! As I didn't want to make a fuss and upset the bride and groom I didn't complain about the 2nd plate of food but now wish that I had, as it is costing me a fortune in dental treatment! As the price was over 150 Euros, what a cheek to serve fat and bones! For the evening reception, there were no toilets and one of the guests' room had to be used - how can they market themselves as a wedding venue without providing basic facilitities? The following day, breakfast was served outside, in a windy courtyard, which was cold. We were offered eggs, but they got cold within seconds, the bread was hard, there was little choice of fruit. Yet when we commented on the poor quality of the food, the management again told us that "Nobody had complained before". Whilst our room was truly beautiful and the bed the most comfortable we've ever slept in, the fridge door did not close properly, so the milk, which we had actually had to ask for, turned sour overnight. The refreshments provided were a few sorry tea-bags that looked that they had been sitting there for years and a few sachets of instant coffee. We were told we could make our own coffee using a cafetiere, but none was actually provided. Finally, as this was supposed to be a wedding venue, we did not expect all the paths to be made of gravel - most of the ladies in the party, me included, damaged their high-heeled shoes. We have had more of a "luxury experience" in small hotels that charged but a fraction of the price.
