“Good hotel, good spa nothing exceptional”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I stayed in a double room with my partner on attending a presentation evening being held in the adjoining building. The room was nice, the shower was lovely and powerful. I did find some woodlouse in the corner of the room (whilst turning on a light) which made me feel the room was slightly unclean but other then that it was perfectly pleasant. The rooms were very cold on arrival but we had the facility of air con/heating which warmed the room nicely. I visited a friends room a few doors down which was a lot smaller (despite paying the same price) contained a locked door which we believe went through to the adjoining rooom, and they only had electric heaters- slightly different experience to ours.

We ate in the bar late afternoon which was nice food and an acceptable price. The evening presentation was held in the adjoining building in a very large meeting room containing bar which was a great facility to have on site, but the drinks prices were ridiculous. On arrival we ordered 1 x single vodka and lemonade and 1 x lemonade and were charged approx £8.65 (£2.80 approx for the lemonade and the rest for the single vodka and lemonade)!

We returned to our room around 12.30 to be confronted with a reception area full of a stag do eating ordered in pizzas, despite being in our 20s not something we expected.

We used the on site spa facilities, steam room and treatments which were good, I felt the treatments were slightly overpriced but found them relaxing and a nice touch to the night away. The staff although were not helpful, the woman at the front desk did not tell us anything as we arrived, or say hello but expected us to know what we were doing and where we were going, not hugely inviting.

We would return to the hotel (probably for a similar presentation evening next year) but would not be somewhere I would greatly recommend.

Room Tip: I would ask for a room at the end of a corridor rather then on one of the main corridors as these se...

Dear Emma-183,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, as it is valuable feedback such as yours that enables us as a Team to focus our efforts.

I will pick up your comments with the Spa team regarding your welcome into the Spa area. The situation that confronted you in reception was not a normal one in that this was a one off group, and the issue was addressed immediately with the group organiser.

I will of course pass on your kind comments regarding the room comfortamd food quality to the Staff Members concerned.

Should you wish to contact me directly, please do so on h6625-gm@accor.com.

Yours sincerely

“One night stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We were attending a funeral for a relative in Brandon and toyed with the idea of staying in a Premier Inn or even driving there in the morning but the funeral was to start at 10.30 am. We decided at go for Brandon Hall which is opposite a relatives house and paid for bed and breakfast with the option to eat there. I am trying to be fair, but I cannot say to much in praise for the place, save the lovely pool you can use if you have the time and inclination.
The staff seemed a bit surly and unhelpful and when my husband went to reception to ask for two more pillows-no spares in the room- the chap wrote the request down but when we returned from visiting relatives they hadn't materialized.
When ready for bed we found that the 'chain' did not work in the bathroom and an uncomfortable night was had! My husband decided to fill the bin with water and flush the loo that way, but for the cost of a four star hotel the experience was not good.
The next morning the receptionist offered to take £5.00 off the bill!
Went to breakfast at 8.45 and found little hot breakfast food left and had to ask for plates, I found the breakfast swimming in fat and not enjoyable.
To top it all we found we were back again for refreshments after the funeral and the food was bland and uninteresting.
This was our first trip to a Mercure hotel and it hasn't left us with a desire to return to one.
I get the impression they are geared up for the businessman but cannot comment on weekend stays.

“The most unaccessible, 'accessible hotel', I have ever been to!!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I stayed here from Fri 3rd until Sun 5th Feb with three friends on a Spa Break. It has to be said that he price we paid, was very good value for money - The Spa Treatments and Staff were very good, the Food was good and the room comfortable.
However, being disabled and on my SMALL electric scooter mean't that I couldn't even access the hotel through the FRONT Door - yes, you read it correctly FRONT Door!! Am I really a second class citizen - it seems so at this hotel. Even so, they advertise having Ramp Access!
After my friend had asked the question at Reception, I had to suffer the humiliation of being taken down the side path to the Fire Exit and taken in through Restaurant!!
Even if I had managed to get in through the front door though, I still wouldn't have managed to get down the three STAIRS to the Reception Desk!
Then, after being allocated our 'Accessible' room, we went, as directed down the corridor. Next problem - once you turn the corner, THREE STAIRS to the next level!!!!!
My friend had to go back to reception, yet again and ask how we were supposed to access the accessible room. Whilst she did so, I sat at the bottom of the three stairs. When asked by a member of staff (in a suit) if I had a problem, I pointed at my scooter, then the stairs, to which she just walked off in the other direction.
At this point, my friend returned with a little man who produced a folding ramp from a cupboard and started to put it out. However, we had to ask him to re-do the job safely - he didn't have a clue what he was doing!!!
After I had gone up the ramp with great difficulty (the incline was too steep) and some trepidation, he proceeded to take the ramp away until my friend told that he had better leave it there so that I could get down again as I was here for the weekend.
The story does not end here though I am afraid, as being a disabled person in this hotel, means that you are also excluded from the Bar / Lounge area, as they are back up 3 stairs!!!!The Hotel Staff in general do not have a clue about disability and accessibilty. They boast to have 4 disabled rooms, with interconnecting facility. That is fine if you can get to them in the first place! I have to ask the question, Why have them, when they and the hotel are so inaccessible????
This hotel should take a serious look at itself. It has got more than enough space to create ramps and disabled access. Therefore, get on and do it!
I will be recommending to the local council and Disability Rights Office in the area that they visit this hotel and carry out a FULL ACCESSIBILTY STUDY.

Room Tip: Disabled Rooms are only accessible after you have negotiated the stairs!!!!

“Flexable & Friendly”

Recently stayed for a weekend with two of our daughters and....our dog. I'm normally reluctant to take the dog but we were assured it wouldn't be a problem. It worked perfectly, the hotel is set in its own extensive grounds and there are a number of easily accessable walks on the door-step. The dog was welcome in the bar whilst we had a relaxed drink and some excellent food. The rooms, which were conveniently on the ground floor, were clean & tidy, with all the expected amenities intact, and we loved the breakfast. We would be happy to return there anytime.

“Gone a bit downhill since our last stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Stayed here recently for a Christmas Party. We had good memories of a previous christmas party so was disappointed to find standard had slipped a little. The room we stayed in had a mattress which was so soft and sagging in the middle, hubby and I kept apologising to each other for "rolling" into one another all night long.

The party itself was well organised and had a great DJ/Disco, but the food at both the dinner and breakfast the next day was not that impressive. Breakfast in particular was just short of awful - no fried eggs, no warm plates and the food itself was not that hot in the first place.

The dinner at the Christmas party was OK, but I have eaten much better at other Christmas parties. The food was bland and didn't appear to be as described in the original menus that we chose from. Yes, I know they were catering for quite a few, but really, it should have been better...

Even paying for drinks in the bar was a joke, with inconsistent pricing and errors...

Won't be returning in a hurry...

Room Tip: Go for single beds to get a good nights sleep, unless you like very soft beds!

Dear Luxtraveller66,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, as it is valuable feedback such as yours that enables us as a Team to focus our efforts.

In January and February of this month, we replaced 30 beds, so am confident that the experience that you encountered regarding the bed being very soft has been resolved.

Thank you for your positive comments regarding the entertainment at the Christmas Party, and I have passed on your comments regarding the food and bar to my new Food and Beverage Manager.
