“You can't always judge a book by is cover”

Our group had been overbooked at our chosen hotel so we were transferred to the Mar Hotel Alimuri. As we approached it, my heart sank as the outside looks awful and needs a good overhaul and painting but once inside you could see that the surroundings and Staff were as hoped.
We were all promised a seaview room and I had to wait a day for mine (and was given a litre of wine by the Manager as compensation) but once I was moved I was very pleased with the large suite and bathroom.
The food was excellent with waiter service and choice of courses.
I think this hotel does deserve its 4 star rating but does need work to the exterior.

Room Tip: Whilst my room (on reception floor) was large, it did not have a patio or balcony so I would ask for...

“Not a 4 star”

Myself & my husband stayed in August, booked through Thomas Cook.
Do not believe what the Thomas Cook website says about this hotel and its rooms.
This hotel should be 3 star. We booked a All Inclusive holiday and paid extra for balcony/sea view.
The rooms are not good and we made friends with some other couples there, who had the same problems. The beds are very very hard. We had shower, no bath. Small TV, not 19"HD LCD. You do not get soundproof rooms or bathrobes as stated.
We could not have anything at all to eat between 2.30pm & 7pm. There were no irons available in the whole hotel. No sunloungers by pool, only deckchairs. No complimentary newspaper. The Breakfast had poor choice. Entertainment was an Italian singer every night. No themed night. Needs refurb.
The good points: we found the staff all friendly and helpful. All Inclusive drinks were branded, Free wifi in reception, free shuttle bus to and from Sorrento town. We liked being out of town a bit and on the beach (although it was very small & stoney) Beautiful sunset.

“fantastic seaside view hotel, but low quality hotel”

we should have stayed at the sister hotel Conca Azur in Massa Lubrense, but when we showed up ath the hotel, there were no rooms the hotel clerk tried to explain in Italian!, and they wanted us to move to another hotel without any explanations.
Having used many hours in advance to find a good Sorrento hotel, we were very angry and disappointed about this and didn´t want to stay in the other hotel as it seemed lower standarded. The hotel group´s other hotels were busy, but after many discussions and quarrels with the hotel clerk, the local travel agent, and finally out travel company (FTI Reisen, Germany) we were moved to this hotel.
No compensation or upgrade were offered from neither the hotel nor the travel company, so it seemed like business as usual for all the involved parties!
First and foremost we must admit that we have never had a better seaview from the 5th floor including the most beautiful sunset and view to the private beach:-)
However, this stay comes out with a very under average performance due to several things.
Food was very average. No big surprises and no meals had a tasteful local touch.
Twice during our stay, the hotel had booked weddings, so that we couldn´t use the normal restaurant and outside tables/bar, and service these days was very slow.
Hotel beds were awful hard to sleep in, and aircondition and refrigerator in the room didn´t work properly.
The restaurant staff was very polite, but the service level at the reception was under average. they couldn´t answer basic questions such as bus/train time schedules, were to walk/run and where to rent bicycles.
Both Sundays at 10.00 there were no sunbeds, no umbrellas, no beach chairs, and no beach towels neither at the pool nor at the beach, which we had been paying for and promised by travel agency (FTI in Germany).
The pool was not properly cleaned and was very small, but with a small area for our children though.
Finally, if you are looking for good walking/running routes this hotel is not well-placed in Sorrento as you must walk/run in the streets with sometimes very heavy traffic/polution.
So all in all the hotel performed not well and was indeed not value for money.

“Superb hotel”

JUst returned from 2 glorious weeks in sorrento. The Alimuri is a superb hotel where everything is done with style. The free shuttle bus into and back from Sorrento is a fantastic bonus. The Bar, restauarant and reception staff are all brilliant and really did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable.

The only downside to our whole experience was the incompetence of the staff at Naples Airport. We stood in a queue for passport control yesterday for over an hour. Guess what...... they only had one person checking passports. Our flight was delayed by over 30 minutes due to this. This is obviously nothing to do with the hotel but I would urge Thomas Cook to make strong representations to the Italian authorities about the whole Naples airport experience. When we flew in the baggage claim area was slow and unwelcoming. It was a pleasure to arrive back in Manchester Airport.......now thats saying something !!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room with balcony and jaccuzzi

“Really nice staff, hotel too far out of Sorrento, so-so food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2011

Surprised at hotel's distance from Sorrento. Free shuttle available but last return 6:30PM, which is when we start our evening. Taxi back to hotel minimum 30Euros (before tip)...do not consider buses after dark as to far to walk from bus drop-off to hotel. We were upgraded to larger room with great view and balcony for my "smoking" (as in cigarettes) hubby. Place clean...staff very, very nice and accomodating. Food average at best. If you want private/remote, fabulous water's edge...you got it. If you want to be in Sorrento...wrong choice.
