Good news, flights from Sydney to Rarotonga direct; let’s hope the four month trial will continue permanently, so that we can visit our holiday paradise without a stop in New Zealand. After many years of travel we now have settled for our favourite Cook Islands destination every year. Since 1985 we have visited Rarotonga 15 times and until recently have always stayed at one of the main holiday resorts. Two years ago we “discovered” the Rarotonga Beach Bungalows; only five in total, and three on the beach.
Paradise discovered the bungalows were designed by Tom; the layout is superb, a spacious veranda above a sandy beach that not only captures the view of the lagoon and, 500 yards away, the magnificent waves of the reef. But we are so close to the lagoons edge that we can watch the fish feeding on the coral from only a few feet. The veranda opens to a large local-cultured featured living room combined with dining and kitchen, to a splendid comfortable bedroom and then to a tropical bathroom and shower that we simply must copy in the next home we build. Well kept, very clean and tidy these bungalows and their position are unparalleled in peace, beauty and serenity, so romantic and relaxing.
At the resorts we used to eat out every night at the many good restaurants on the Island but not now, as the bungalows position is too good to leave, we enjoy most of our meals and wine overlooking the beach as the sun sets. The staff are wonderful, Tom a knowledgeable and genial host, Luckey a warm and happy conversationalist over breakfast who supports the other enthusiastic and cooperative staff. We always look forward to hiring a scooter to explore the island.
The RBB is perfect if you want to avoid the family rush and are looking for a quiet, secluded boutique get-away whilst experiencing the enjoyment of the Island. Yes, we will be back again in early 2011.
