The Kirkmichael is a wonderful example of a traditional village inn. Full of character and history, in a picturesque village in the midst of beautiful countryside (especially when the autumn colours are out), its a refreshing change from plastic formula hotels. The atmosphere was homely, the food tasty, the bedroom clean and comfortable, and the service friendly without being intrusive. Excellent value for money too - I was offered an off-season discount for staying 3 nights. As a single traveller, the availability of a single room was a big attraction. (All too often the only option is to pay over the odds for single occupancy of a double room). The bar and small dining room are the main hub of activity in the evening, but it might also be nice to make more use of the residents' lounge, as a place to sit and meet other guests. (At the moment this seems to be largely unused). Definitely to be recommended if you're looking for an affordable, get-away-from-it-all break.
