“More of a hostel than hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

The whole hotel was freezing due to a broken boiler we were told this would be fixed later in the evening. When we got home it was still freezing and I could not find any staff to get a spare duvet or extra heater-despite ringing the front door bell a million times!
Our room had no mirror, when I requested one in order to do my hair/make up I was told by the nice boy, who seemed to be running things on his own, he would have to make enquiries. I did not get a mirror.
There was no valance on the bed making the room look cheap.

We ate in the restaurant and had steak pie. Fantastic pastry, good chips but appalling quality of meat and veg boiled to within an inch of it's life. There was also a dollop of cold mash on the side too?!?
Breakfast was reasonable but the chef was cold and less than welcoming and of course the dinning room was freezing!!!

In fairness to the owners, we possibly should have alerted them to our complaints on check-out but the chef dealt with our check out and There was no one else about.

We stayed here out of necessity-attending a wedding near-by. I would not recommend this hotel nor will I ever stay here again.

“A lovely family dinner at Burnhouse Manor!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

Having dined and attended numerous weddings at Burnhouse Manor over the years, it was a natural choice as our function for a recent farewell family meal. We had a party of 19, some of which required various dietary meals (veggie/vegan/dairy free etc) and I have to say the staff, Clare in particular, were excellent in getting this organised for us. They couldn't have been more helpful & responded promptly to emails over the weeks. Nothing was too much and we were even able to change the menu when we heard how good the steak pie! When it finally came around it really was a lovely night, and we were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves. Food was pretty good (the macaroni cheese & chips was especially good) and the staff on the night were also fantastic. My only slight criticism would be we did not have chips served with our meal as billed on the menu and the 4 courses were served rather quickly (although may have been due to the chef instead of the waitors of course) But all in all a great experience in a warm, friendly hotel on a freezing Scottish night! Would thoroughly reccommend, especially for functions.

“Lunch with Santa - big mistake!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

While you may not have to queue in town to meet Santa, prepare for bitter disappointment if you think that the 'famous lunch with Santa' is any kind of relaxing alternative. The Amazing grotto is some twinkly lights and inflatable decorations concealed by pegged up white linen at the entrance of the main dining room. Children have to wait until the end of their meal to be invited in to see, quite possibly the worst, most uncharismatic Santa I've ever seen, sitting on an old red sofa. Santa was quite blatantly a member of the service staff (shirt/trousers were visible under the ill-fitting Santa suit) who was painfully aware that the beard/moustache was continuously slipping in front of the children. Despite having informed the establishment well in advance the names and ages of the kids, presents were mis-spelt and muddled (3 year old given a 5+ puzzle). Some very tall tales were needed to prevent dreams being shattered.

The menu was equally bland and disappointing. The 'hand-carved traditional roast ayrshire turkey' resembled poor quality supermarket delicatessen produce, hand carved with a rotary meat slicer and tasting no better. The 'home-made' trimmings were obviously made in a home with the ability to precision engineer meat and stuffing into a perfectly reformed circle. All of it cooled rather too much while we were repeatedly asked to make dessert choices while eating our main courses!

Despite having a half-empty dining room and deserted bar area, the service was disgraceful. The tables weren't cleared between courses and there was no opportunity to purchase drinks to accompany the meal. Despite this being a clearly intended family event, there was nothing to occupy the children between courses. Neither were there sufficient high chairs to go around or seating that could be pushed sufficiently close to the table for toddlers to reach their food.

What could have been a magical lunch for our family was a limp, over-priced excuse of an event. I would recommend venturing out in the rain/wind/snow to queue for hours to see a decent Santa in town before ever even contemplating returning to Burnhouse Manor.

“Gem of a Manager/Wedding Coordinator”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

My son got married at the Burnhouse earlier this year and after reading some of the previous reviews, I just want to commend the Manager/Wedding Coordinator Louize as I believe that without her there would be weddings. We visited the hotel often in the run up to the wedding and on EVERY visit Louize was there and working very hard, it was easy to see to anyone that she was under huge pressure doing almost every job in the hotel but also managed to greet us with a smile and gave us the best wedding we could have ever wished for and I personally thank Louize for this and not the hotel. Louize deserves every award she has won. I hope she has more support in the future.
