“Perfect sun-soaked villas in Agia Marina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

I've got nothing but good memories about our week-long stay at Apladas Apartments in August this year. The sun, friendly people and great experiences were enhanced by always having this place to come back to.

It's situated right on the main road that runs through Agia Marina and on to Platanias. It's a little nondescript from the outside but any tour or taxi driver will know it. Its main level (upon which the villas and pools are located) is about the equivalent of two floors above the street so you not only avoid the noise of the daily goings-on of the locals but you also have a fabulous view of Agii Theodori and the blue Mediterranean from the bar (which serves reasonably priced drinks).

The property itself is clean and the palmed gardens well-manicured. Rooms are cleaned daily and are simply decorated. Air conditioning is an extra but we didn't bother as the cool evening breeze made the rooms comfortable by the time we returned. The villas have two levels but noise from the above vacationers didn't reach us enough to bother us.

There are two pools, connected to each other but divided by a fence to make the shallower a safe place for kids to splash around. There are more than ten sunbeds around the pool area and umbrellas around if you want some shade.

All of the above were much appreciated during our visit but the best part were the staff who were not only helpful and ready to provide tips or ideas for trips but friendly and effervescent in the typical Greek way and always willing to share a joke. It was great to know that these friendly people were looking after us and that any special need would be no hassle at all (though we didn't need to ask ourselves).

It's not really a downside but this hotel is sold in package deals for Scandinavians so you will likely find yourselves surrounded by Finns, Swedes, Norwegians and Danes. However leave the hotel and you'll meet the full spectrum of nationalities as expected. One great bonus is that the hotel has a special arrangement with a beach bar just down the road which means you can reserve a beach chair free of charge on a prime part of the beach. Excellent!

Room Tip: Choosing a second-floor apartment means you'll have a private balcony as the ground-floor units...

“Super apartment hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

My husband and I stayed for 1 week in September 2011 in a 2 room apartment just beside the pool. The Apladas Apartments is extremely neat and clean, both apartment and pool area. There are many beautiful palm trees and flower bushes. The staff is very kind and helpful and treat you in a very personal and nice way. In the pool bar you can get a colourful drink, a good caffe latte or a ham and cheese toast - even at midnight when you have a late arrival. Here you'll also find books and magazines (hotel guests left them) in many different languages for free use.

The view to the sea and the Theodori island with the famous Kri-Kri goats is wonderful and the closeness to the fantastic sandy beach with crystal clear water and the shops is perfect. You can easy go to Chania by the bus (€ 1,60 one way) 30 minutes drive. We did not experience any genes from traffic noice - the hotel is situated high over street level (elevator or steps bring you there). If you are not self catering you can choose between many different tavernas - our favorite is "Manolis" in the old village, a little up-hill short walk (600 metres) from Apladas. Honest food and very reasonable prices - and the owner always shakes your hand when you leave :-)

If we are hard pressed to say something not so positive about the place, it should be that the modest kitchen equipment is not suitable for the large culinary experiences. But actually, it hardly pays to spend your precious vacation to cook when you can eat a wonderful Souvlaki with Manolis for € 7.50. As usual in the Mediterranian (wine producing) countries there also were no wine glasses in the apartment, but at the local In-Ka supermarket they could be purchased for € 1.20, so why fret over it?

We will definitely come back to this beautiful place / apartment.

Room Tip: We only saw the inside of one of the newest buildings. For a family with teenagers we reccomend the...

NICE place but lots of steps to go up.
Good rooms and real honest staff. My wife left her watch in the locker and she got it a week later.
Rooms nice, cleaned daily, hot showers.
Compact neat place.
All restaurants and bars close by.
The beach just 5 mins away.
AGIA Marina is the best place to stay on this side of crete.

First I want to thank you for your honest review and I take this opportunity to update TripAdvisor readers with a facility that did not exist at our hotel during your stay in 2007. It is true that until 2007 our guest's had to walk up lots of steps to reach the level of the pool bar and reception area. However, in our continuous effort to satisfy our guest's, we have built an ELEVATOR that will take our guest's to the pool bar / reception of the hotel with the push of a button!!

This year it's the 11th time visiting this hotel
From the very first time me and my family visited this hotel we all fell in love; the owners of the hotel - the Apladas family - are now to be considered as our friends. Location is exellent, short way to the beach, which is one of the best in whole Crete, especially for kids. Beautiful pool area planted with palms, hibiscus fruittrees, roses etc. and with a small poolbar serving drinks, icecream and small dishes. The apartments are of an average standard with a simple kitchen for making breakfast and with aircondition. The staff working in the hotell are service minded and nice. The locale inhabitans of Agia Marina are hospitable and recognizes you all from year to year. Lots of shopping posibilities, tavernas and restaurants - and the prices are low compared to norwegian conditions. Our family just love this place and are going back in the end og july this year for 2 week. This summer we are going to be 7 persons: my son and his girlfriend, my brother in law, his son and stephdaugther, my wife and myself. For all people who loves peace and quiet, nice people and relaxing and maybe romantic holidays we recommend this small nice hotel.
