Our family trip to El Solencio was a much needed escape from the type 1 culture of the USA. Although the ride from San Jose airport was an adventure of its own, our arrival at el solencio insured us that our time there would truly be a peaceful and relaxing get away. This resort is all about sustainability, evidenced by their own greenhouse, chicken coops, and trout pond. The nature hikes are only moderately difficult and some of the choices are flat and short. The longer hikes are to 3 waterfalls on site and the guide takes his time to share about the flora and fauna as you traverse the trails. The spa is awesome and the staff attentive to every need. All our meals were included and were fresh and healthy. The villa ws spacious, clean, and had a private outdoor jacuzzi. Highly recommend.

Wow. My husband and I stayed at El Silencio for our Honeymoon in November 2011 (sorry for the tardy review). While I have certainly rated other hotel reviews at 5 stars, I wish there were a way to give El Silencio a 6. From the moment Vinicio picked us up from the airport, we were completely taken care of. They eco concierge service is unrivaled. The food was included and absolutely amazing. Healthy, local, gourmet and creative. We were impressed with every single course (best tortilla soup either of us have ever tasted). The rooms are spacious, with a huge king size bed, premium linens, a wonderful bathroom with awesome shower and great lounging furniture. We had a private two person jacuzzi tub on our deck. We had great adventures that we booked through our concierge-- went to Hot Springs, did white water rafting, ziplining and a horse back riding trip. The spa is beautiful as well-- a must see. We had fun just walking around the property as well. We also went on a cultural tour with Vinicio-- made tortillas and visited the local town. It was a highlight of our trip. We stayed there for four nights and would go back in a heartbeat. Since we were there in November, it rained most of the time. It certainly wasn't cold, but we did need long pants and light weight long sleeve shirts. The weather wasn't the best during our stay, so we'd probably aim to go back when it's supposed to be warmer (we couldn't view the volcano on the trip we booked because of rain and fog, and we couldn't go hiking because of torrential rain). But truly, honestly, the best hotel I've ever stayed in. Thanks for an amazing honeymoon!

We stayed at this resort for 2 nights in March and booked it on a web special. It is located about l l/2 hours north of San Jose on the borderline of rainforest and cloud forest. Our accommodation was a private, upscale, spacious cabin with a king-size bed, and 2 twin-size sofas that easily provided a comfortable sleep for our adult daughter. The bathroom had double sinks and a large walk-in shower. On a back deck was our private, large jacuzzi. The front deck had a large, comfortable rocking chair for each of us with an awesome view of the rainforest and hills. Wifi is available in the main lodge only. Our package included 3 meals a day served in the main lodge. The menu had good variety, was fresh, and well prepared. Beverages, other than coffee and tea, were extra and were pricey. An enjoyable 3 hour guided walking tour through the rainforest was also provided with our package. The spa was in a separate building and looked lovely but we didn't use any of the services. This was a unique, very relaxing experience. Our only disappointment was that the staff appear to have been trained to be "professional", which comes across as being distant and uncaring. The Costa Rican warmth and friendliness we experienced everywhere else in CR was lacking. There was very little interaction between staff and guests and we wondered if this was intentional in the type of experience Management is trying to create for their guests.

Room tip: The cabins are located on a hillside, so you might need to make a special request for a lower unit if you have mobility concerns.

Our sincere thanks for taking the time to review El Silencio Lodge & Spa on Trip Advisor. We genuinely appreciate this forum as a living compass to guide and improve our services. I am elated to learn that we succeeded in providing your family with a wonderful forest immersion experience. Our goal is to provide relaxation, emphasizing the gentle sounds of nature and embracing the character of the Bajos del Toro community, a small rural town that is slightly more subdued than the feisty tropical atmosphere of our coastal regions. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to provide more details about your experience (outreach@grupoislita.com). Thank you for visiting Costa Rica and for highlighting its friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

We stayed at El Silencio Lodge for 2 nights 4th of April. It is an amazing place. Such attention to detail. The room was stunning - great views, comfy bed and our own outdoor jacuzzi! The food was really good and interesting. All local food and no beef on the menu!
The trails around the lodge were well kept and varied. I wish we could have stayed longer. We could not fault the lodge..

Room tip: Our room was number 7. Not overlooked at all!!

El Silencio was our first hotel on our 2-week trip to Costa Rica. We were feeling a little sick before our departure to Costa Rica so this was a great place to relax and recuperate. We arrived late in the evening (Don't try driving here in the dark - the fog in the mountains and the roads can be quite scary!) and were greeted by Ronald, our eco-concierge. Check-in was quick and our room had been turned down already for the night - with the awesome hot water bottles under the covers!

We only spent two days at the resort which I feel is more than enough if you are not doing any offsite activities. We did the hike to the waterfalls which is quite easy although we didn't see any wildlife. The waterfalls are beautiful! We had great weather although it can be quite unpredictable.

The food and service was EXCELLENT! You will not go hungry! The staff are very friendly and were the same familiar faces the whole time which is comforting.

The natural fireplace in the lobby is great as are the complimentary blankets on the lounge chairs.

Everything is simple and not over-the-top luxury but very comfortable and peaceful. The outdoor hot tub was a wonderful way to unwind in the evening. The bed had a wonderful view out the large sliding doors to the valley and the mountains outside. Sitting on the porch on the rocking chairs is a great way to enjoy the views and the rolling clouds that come through the valley.

I would recommend this hotel as a great place to start or end your trip to Costa Rica!

Enjoy!

Room tip: We were in room 2 which is higher up on the mountain with better views of the valley and surrounding mountains.

Thank you for giving us a chance to be your first hosts while in Costa Rica! I am glad that your relaxing stay gave you a chance to fully charge your batteries before exploring the rest of our beautiful country. As you point out, evening arrivals to El Silencio Lodge & Spa are discouraged due to our secluded location and possibility of dense nighttime fog.

Your vivid description of the view from the porch of our Suites is right on the mark. Enjoying the rolling clouds is uniquely mesmerizing and soothing! We certainly hope to have chance to be your hosts again. Perhaps next time you could include a visit to our sister beach property, Hotel Punta Islita! Warm regards.
