“Peak Pleasure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Stayed one night here in January 2012.

Old characterful house, refurbished in 2008 in a boutique style. Room was large and well- appointed. The bed was actually two singles pushed together covered in a 5ft double mattress. The two beds looked pretty old but the double mattress was comfortable. Large bath, modern effective shower.
All clean & tidy with facilities like a kettle, teas, cafetiere & good quality coffee, magazines (very nice touch!) widescreen tv.

All in all a great room.

Room 6 is therefore fine, but it does have some air-conditioning/heating unit or some such contraption outside in the grounds which hums very loudly in the night. (It must be set against the outside wall. The reception area nearby is loud & echoing, so when you are in room 6... because some people these days shout loudly instead of just speaking normally...
this can be annoying.
Maybe the staff are unaware of how easily the sound carries.

However these things aside, we can thoroughly recommend this lovely hoThe staff are very friendly, the food is excellent and the location superb.

Room Tip: Go for a higher floor.

“Cold Temps but beautiful weekend in the Peak District”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

My husband, myself and our dog spent two nights at The Maynard MLK long weekend in a superior double room (#7). The room was HUGE, the biggest of any UK room we have ever stayed in. The bed was a king, a little too soft for me but my husband thought it was great. Tons of extra pillows. The TV didn't have the best selection of channels, couldn't watch any SKY sports channels or any football... The room was just above the main entrance and had bay windows with a nice little seating area. This led to the room being very cold. The first night we couldn't get the heat to stay on (in the morning we talked to reception about it and they brought up an electrical heater right away). The bathroom was a nice size and the bathtub big. The only thing that we found bad about the room was that the bathroom had a really weird smell. We left the fan on the whole weekend. Didn't end up taking a soaking bath because didn't want to stay in the bathroom long with the smell. Breakfast was a great deal for the price. The staff was great and really friendly. Had a really nice conversation with one of them while my husband was walking our dog. WiFi was nice to have in the hotel. The dinner was good. But the best thing about the stay was the desserts!!! We had a Sticky Toffee Pudding and the Chocolate Tart. We would recommend this hotel and have already to some of our friends. Not very far away from Chatsworth House or Stanage Edge. Great opportunities to hike and wonderful trails within 30 min of the hotel.

“Disappointing”

The location and views are great, and the staff were friendly and helpful but everything else (except breakfast) was disappointing. A fantastic old building has been 'updated' by an overzealous interior designer who likes black lampshades and 'feature' battleship grey walls - some bits of it work but others do not (a matter of taste I accept). in fairness our bathroom was nice and light and airy. The evening meal was a bit 'nouveau' - stingy portions tastefully arranged e.g. monkfish medallions that are postage stamp size, rib eye slices (not a whole steak in case that is what you were expecting to fortify you for a day hiking). The breakfast was good with the full 'Derbyshire' featuring excellent peppery sausages.

I am disappointed to hear you did not enjoy your stay as much as you would of liked. I appreciate your comments about the decor.

Just to clarify regarding the Ribeye, it is a full Ribeye steak. Our Chefs were slicing it to display how well cooked you had opted for, and the colour from that (we hoped) helped excite the plate. However we can understand your opinion and I thank you for the feedback.

Hopefully we have the chance to welcome you again.

Kind regards

“Another fantastic stay...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

First stayed at The Maynard in Feburary and loved it so much that we thought we would return for our wedding anniversary in Dec. It didn't disappoint. The hotel is so friendly yet at the same time stylish and modern. The rooms are spacious and well appointed and the staff are always happy to help. The fact that it is a 'dog friendly' is great especially when there are such amazing walks on the doorstep.

On the basis of the meal we had last time we decided to stay in the restaurant to eat on the night we were there. The food was good and the atmosphere was perfect.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone particularly those wanting to travel with their dog. We commented whilst we were there that there are not many hotels that we have returned to more than once, with the exception of The Maynard, and we will certainly look to make a return visit in the near future. Thanks for another wonderful stay from us and Reg the dog!

Room Tip: We first stayed in a superior room but the standard room we had this time was just as nice just a li...

“A perfect retreat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

An amazing stay in the Dark Peak area! My wife and I stayed at the hotel for one night whilst hiking up Stanage Edge. From entry to exit this place is amazing. The rooms are large, warm and inviting not to mention contemporary. The food is exceptional and actually could get rave reviews on its own without the accomodation. The bar area is inviting and the local beers on top are very good too. The experience is great and would recommend to all.
