we stayed in number 8 yet again this year and had a brilliant holliday this apartment is very clean and very well kitted out.
elcalaton still has its charm and still unspoilt,we have been going for a number of years now and hope to be going for many more.

I have to say that we didn’t share the enthusiasm of the people writing the other reviews. We stayed (2 couples) in number seven and found some aspects annoying. There were 4 of us but only 3 chairs on the terrace and okay you could drag one of the chairs out from the dinner table but this property caters for more than 3 people.

The electricity going off during the afternoon and also at 12.00 at night doesn’t sound too much of a problem until you realise that the icebox in the fridge has to be kept filled with the freezer blocks, the ones used in cool boxes/bags, in order to keep the fridge cold when the power is off. If you want ice in your drinks then forget it (unless you drive to the supermarket to purchase a bag of ice and throw the rest away because there is no room in the small freezer box). The generator does not start until 8.30 in the morning and so if you have a young family that wakes up early, you cannot even put on a DVD to entertain them.

The television whilst showing some channels in HD did not show any English channels at all. Not that we are Coronation Street fans or anything like that but an English news channel would have been good.

We showered very quickly so that the fourth person had enough hot water left as this was limited.

Outside the beach was lovely but the ‘no camping’ signs were totally ignored and so the view from the balcony was dotted with tents and camper vans. Early in the morning we could see people leaving their tents to crouch in the sand to relieve themselves or even make a short trip to the sea.

We did visit some of the restaurants and as described they were mostly very good but you do pay for what you get.

Taking everything into account, we decided that 10 days here was too much to bear and so we paid £560 per couple to stay at the Barceló hotel in Corralejo for the last 5 nights. Calculating what we would be spending on food anyway and then all the convenience of a nice big hotel room with unlimited running water, English TV channels and being able to watch it when we wanted to, it was well worth it.

It’s not as idyllic as it seems unless you are an avid camper and then perhaps the facilities may appear to be good.

All the comments are taking into account the price which wasn’t especially cheap.

We stayed in No. 7 which is an upstairs apartment with a veranda facing the sea. It is completely private, overlooked by no one. The apartment is very bright and clean, and comfortable with one double room, one twin, a shower room and a through kitchen, lounge, diner, with a sofa and easy chairs. Well equipped, even with a tv, dvd player and radio - not that we used them. There is a cupboard full of paperbacks. The electricity goes off in the afternoon and again at night - but not a problem. They provide a large battery lamp thing. We always had hot water when we wanted it for showers and the fridge never seemed to be off. Never used the cooker or the micro wave. There is a toaster. You need to take your own beach towels. Other towels are changed during the week. There is a beach brolly, but that needs some controlling as it is very windy here.
Spent most of the days on the beach, amazing rock formations. I love snorkelling, and although the creatures do not match say the Maldives or the Caribbean in colour, they are still plentiful. The rise and fall of the tide is quite considerable, so it is possible to get to the outer lagoons as well as the one closer in. I was never aware of any currents. The water temperature was ok - bit chilly but soon got used to it. Only saw one person wearing a wetsuit. Fish you will see include - mullet, bream, chromis, parrot fish, blennies, wrasse, salemas, etc.
We ate out most evenings. Our favourite restaurant in El Cotillo was Casa Rustica, go for the fish and seafood stew, followed by the Beach Restaurant on the lagoon beach, have the fish of the day - and have the same at the Blue Cow. The beach restaurant is open from lunchtime but shuts at dusk. Run by English couple. Mare Alta - tapas bar was never open when we were there. Not so keen on Azzurro's. In Corralejo recommend Agua bar right on the harbour front for amazing cocktails, juices, and baguettes. We visited the fishing museum at the lighthouse - interesting and includes a climb up the smaller tower. Also supported the Clean Ocean Project at Lajares, t.shirts etc. bit like our Surfers Against Sewage, and went in this huge artesania shop with local souvenirs, including lace. Lajares has all these surf bars and shops - and is nowhere near the sea! Drank Honey Rum - gorgeous and the mojo verte sauce is really nice. The local beer is quite drinkable - Tropical - a sort of lager. Couldn't find a bitter. We used the supermarket on the way into El Cotillo. Prices were reasonable, and the prices in the restaurants were in the main really reasonable.
Clothes - lived in bikini, rash vests, t shirts and shorts. Out in the evening wore cut off jeans, skirt, and husband wore shorts. Because of the wind it can feel a bit cool at night - so might need a light weight top or cardigan. El Cotillo is a small fishing village with holiday apartments - compared to Corralejo it could never be called a resort. It is very laid back, relaxed, and friendly.
We hired a car through Cicar - easy pick up and return to the airport, and roads are suprisingly good. Flew with Thomson from Bristol. Usual tight seats - but just bearable for the flight time. On the way out the movie sound was not working. Took our own food and drink.
Overall we had a brilliant week and if we do return I wouldn't think to stay in any other apartment than No. 7.

Myself and two girlfriends stayed at el caleton, apt. no. 6 as we were looking for a beach holiday away from the crowds. It was ideal. The apartment is simply furnished, but lovely. We had all we needed (microwave, nice shower room, oven, fridge and freezer, tv, dvd player)
The best thing about the apartment is its location: a pretty garden with cacti, palms and cats (friendly strays) leads onto the beach. It is calm and good for paddling. around the oher side of the lagoon is a better place to swim.
Within ten minutes walk there is a beach bar which has really nice food, drink and staff, who can speak english if you need them to, and a restaurant called Azzurro which also has really nice staff and delicious canarian and italian food. We recommend the paella. DELICIOUS!
Within a 25 minute walk you are in the village of el cotillo, and there are some nice little streets with tasty restaurants. It can be a bit quiet there, but it was low season. Marealta has delicious tapas and has a lovely vibe, with it being half inside and half outside with cactus' and bushes growing inside it.
