“Romantic getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2012

Have had two stays now at Spicers Clovelly Estate and thoroughly enjoyed both. We stayed in a spa suite which is spacious and very elegantly furnished with a French theme. The fittings are all of top quality and not to be faulted. The spa is large and certainly the most comfortable I have been in. The bedding is sheer delight as well. A massive range of new books available to read everywhere. Loved the breakfast - served promptly and the variety was perfect and sufficient. The degustation meal at night was something not to be missed - not too often you enjoy every mouthful of a meal!! Great location with the Montville village within walking distance, and a nice drive to several other towns which are worth visiting [although it poured raining and I could not have been happier staying in our room watching the rain and clouds outside]. Staff are very friendly and welcoming, but not intrusive. Negatives - did not notice that you had to put towels on floor for replacement [I would have expected fresh towels for the price], and tea/biscuits were not replaced on 2nd day. Also very expensive wine/tea/coffee prices. A little overpriced, but certainly well worth the experience.

Room Tip: Would choose to pay the extra and have the large spa room. They are on the top floor, so don't...

“Girls seek luxury week away & found it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

2 girls who wanted a luxury week to pamper themselves. We got what we wanted. The surroundings are beautiful, from the Montville hinterland greenery and vistas to the gorgeous modern decor of Spicers Clovelly. Our room on the ground level, number Five, the most modest level to choose, was gorgeous. Intimate but not too small. The bathroom was quite large and included heated marble floor, L'Occitane products, large shower with 2 shower heads (one either end), heated towel rack and use of rain water. The bed was gorgeous, but we requested it to be split into twin beds. The pillows were comfortable and the neutral decor with a French twist really appealed to me. It was a pleasure to spend time in the room rather than use it just as a base to sleep. The tea selection was little individual boxes of interesting flavours. There was attention to detail throughout Spicers that a girl in particular really appreciates. The library which was a walk around the verandah away was a cosy set up, and like the rest of Clovelly, it was like being at someone's beautiful house. It appears that there are not too many guests at one time, so alot of the time felt like we had the place to ourselves. Just a few couples at breakfast time. The al fresco Parisienne breakfast, with a background of French music floating out from the kitchen, comes out all together on one tray - an assortment of fruit, pastries, poached egg with peppers, cheese & ham, sourdough & jams made on the premises, etc, etc. Very boutique. A freshly squeezed juice which changes each day. We visited the day spa one afternoon which was one of our luxuries, but the highlight for me was dinner at The Long Apron. We sat up at the cute little bar for a pre-dinner drink, poring over the menu. We selected a 5 course option. Dinner was exquisite, and not what you expect. It felt really special to be presented with what you have probably eaten before in a whole new way - and probably with a few things on the plate you have never had before. We had excellent service too - our waiter seemed eager to bring out and show off the meals and recommend wines to match.

“Could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

The positives: tastefully decorated, clean, spacious and comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff, lovely semi-rural grounds, generous and tastey breakfast, pleasant and comfortable common lounging areas. Unfortunately, the negatives: the shower water pressure was sometimes very poor, the wi-fi did not reach our room, the iPod-dock stereo is el-cheapo, the the degustation dinner was a bit dissappointing, the wine list is surpringly limited and uninteresting, the newspapers are not room-delivered. Accordingly, the rather high price is not quite justified - a shame, as all these things would not be particularly expensive to rectify and could make this a wonderful place to re-visit.

“Disappointed”

This was our second stay at this property, and it will be the last. We had to change our arrival date by one day, and unfortunately the only room available was room 8. A dreadful room, small, complete lack of privacy (had to keep the curtains closed at all times) and it is located next to a common lounge area for guests. The noise from a large group drinking in the lounge was unbearable, they might as well have been sitting in our room! The room is also located right underneath an upstairs room, so we had to listen to the other guests who were staying upstairs, thump up and down the wooden stairs, you could even hear them flushing the toilet. The room was so small you had to sit on the bed, no point sitting outside the room as it was right on the main walkway to the common lounge. Dinner was excellent. Laurie, the maitre d' is fantastic!
Servicing of the room the next day was very basic, no new toiletries, no replacement biscuits, minimum amount of sugar.
It was certainly not worth the amount we paid.

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

Stylish room with all the touches, and very comfortable bed, i am going to track down those pillows. Pretty gardens and outdoor areas although unforntunatly raining when we were there. Dinner was one of the most memorable meals I have every had. Presentation was very inventive and great flavour combinations. I wanted to photogragh each couse.
Breakfast also well presented and good variety. Service by all staff was friendly and efficient. I wouldnt call the cost of the room good value but the whole experience was so enjoyable and relaxing that it made up for it. If you stay here definatly have dinner.
