This hotel sits on the shore of Loch Shiel, about 15 miles west of Fort William, on the “Road to the Isles.” Coming from a hotter climate (95F, 35C) we appreciated the local weather (65F, 18C), but I was a bit amazed to find roaring fires in the lobby and dining room. My wife loved them, however. Our room was clean, comfortable and well equipped. As other review have noted, guests are not provided with keys for the rooms, which remain unlocked, although the staff will provide a key if requested. The hotel staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. We arrived later in the evening than we had anticipated, and had not booked a table for dinner in the main dining room. The staff had reserved a table for us in the bar which, unfortunately, was a bit too crowded and noisy to be a pleasant dining experience. Fortunately, before our food arrived, they were able to get us a table in the main dining room. Dinner menu was excellent, and the breakfast quite good. Note that there is no porter or bellman or elevator, so you carry your own luggage.
Note also, that for Harry Potter fans, it is a 5-10 minute walk to a great view of the Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct, which most of the films show being crossed by the Hogwarts Express train.
Our prior nights were spent in the Edinburgh area, with the goal of the drive between the two locations being to track down all the film locations from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” I will also note that the drive to Fort William through Glencoe encompasses the most magnificent scenery in all of Scotland.
