“over priced”

I called in recently for a meal, which was quite satisfactory in terms of taste & execution, but depressingly over-priced in terms of content - £9 for some pasta, cheese & herbs. This was a £5 meal upgraded, presumably because of the nice views over Loch Shiel, where Prince Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Sylvester Severino Maria Stuart landed in his failed attempt to displace the English in 1745, and probably paid less for his pasta. Wake up to 2011, Glenfinnan House Hotel !

“Great location, enjoyable stay, but a few things to work on still....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

The hotel is in an amazing location right by the Loch Shiel and with views over the monument at Glenfinnan. It is welcoming and has a good ambiance. Our dog was welcomed without fuss and without the huge list of rules that some dog-friendly hotels 'welcome' you with.

The bedroom (Jacobite Suite) was huge, with lovely views over the loch. The bathroom was amazing - it was if we'd walked into a 5 star bathroom in some smart Miami hotel rather than a country house in the Highlands. Someone has obviously spent a lot of money on the bathroom recently, and it looks suitably impressive, but some of it would have been better spent making the main part of the bedroom more up to date, as that room is not up to scratch, despite being roomy and having a 4 poster. The furnishings in the bedroom were tired & of mixed quality. As for the star bathroom - I actually would prefer to see a nice cast iron claw bath & big glamourous old fashioned style shower in a Highland hotel than the corner jacuzzi & Italian stone/marble style grandeur of the current design, so that may be better in other rooms as they are done. The bathroom is huge but the shower is actually quite small.

We found ourselves thinking about what could be done to the bedroom with fairly little effort and cost to turn it from so-so to excellent, and we could think quite a few things - I'd recommend the owners spend a bit of time doing the same thing & this place would become spectacular. I'd actually recommend they book into the Kilchurn room at the Ardanaiseig Hotel in Taynuilt to get an idea of what a bit of imagination and colour & better lighting can do to similar room, and the use of quality bed throws etc.

The other room that could do with someone waving a magic wand (or at least having a good look at and improving the paintwork, pictures & lighting) is the dining room. It is nearly very good, but is let down by a hideous shattered & broken white board covering part of the wood panelled roof (at least paint it brown like the wood so it fits in a little better!) nd some tired painting & furnishings.

The waiting staff were friendly, but their only English was the words on the menu. When we tried to warn the waitress that the soup was so hot it had scalded our mouth, she had no idea what we were saying & said she couldn't speak English.

Don't let these points put you off though, because this a good hotel in a good location, with a friendly welcome and very good food in the restaurant. The public rooms are friendly and welcoming and with a little more effort this could become a great hotel.

Room Tip: Loch views are worth having. We only saw the Jacobite Suite which is definitely worth having, it'...

“very laid back and homely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2011

very nice feel as soon as you walk in, because of rather than in spite of the strong polish contingent! Such a shame that the Scottish hotel experience, here as elsewhere, is dominated by non-scots! Nothing against the poles - just the continued terrible reflection on the willingness and ability of the natives to work in the hotel industry.
Chef - a scot, is excellent - food imaginative, with decent portions, & plenty of local produce on the menu. Service let down by recently employed, poorly trained Polish lass with language difficulties - vey pleasant, willing, but no idea. More supervision in the restaurant required - empty tables cleared ignoring those punters remaining, sat with used plates and empty coffee cups.
Situation is great, our room was very nice with huge bathroom and jacuzzi.
overall a very nice place to stay.

“Beautiful location, exceptionally friendly staff”

This hotel sits on the shore of Loch Shiel, about 15 miles west of Fort William, on the “Road to the Isles.” Coming from a hotter climate (95F, 35C) we appreciated the local weather (65F, 18C), but I was a bit amazed to find roaring fires in the lobby and dining room. My wife loved them, however. Our room was clean, comfortable and well equipped. As other review have noted, guests are not provided with keys for the rooms, which remain unlocked, although the staff will provide a key if requested. The hotel staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. We arrived later in the evening than we had anticipated, and had not booked a table for dinner in the main dining room. The staff had reserved a table for us in the bar which, unfortunately, was a bit too crowded and noisy to be a pleasant dining experience. Fortunately, before our food arrived, they were able to get us a table in the main dining room. Dinner menu was excellent, and the breakfast quite good. Note that there is no porter or bellman or elevator, so you carry your own luggage.

Note also, that for Harry Potter fans, it is a 5-10 minute walk to a great view of the Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct, which most of the films show being crossed by the Hogwarts Express train.

Our prior nights were spent in the Edinburgh area, with the goal of the drive between the two locations being to track down all the film locations from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” I will also note that the drive to Fort William through Glencoe encompasses the most magnificent scenery in all of Scotland.

If it helps, here are the hotel GPS coordinates:

“Amazing place with very delicious food”

This was the second time the we've stayed in the Glenfinnan House Hotel. Its location is amazing. It's directly on the lake. We'd a beautiful room with loch view. The hotel is very familial. The service is great. We'd dinner and breakfast there and both were one of the best we'd in Scotland. The hotel is really a well kept secret. I'm sure, that we'll come back again.
