“Old colonial town flavour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2011

The hotel is in the town, with original and new rooms around a pleasant garden area. We had the presence of a guide which was useful in getting more information about this slightly remote town and its history. Nothing particularly outstanding about the hotel, although it met our needs well and we were only there for one night ( which conincided with a local pop festival, although mercifully it finished before midnight!). Visited the girls school next door run by nuns for orphan and other Indian girls from age four to 14. One of the only schools for hundreds of miles for these girls, and receiving little or no state aid but sponsored by an American charity.

“Simple Traditional Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

If you want plush four/five star facilities don't stay here. However if you want clean adequate accommdation with good international food and great friendly service in a traditional village setting this is a good place to stop.

They even make their own wine from their vineyards byt he river which are worth a try.

“Quaint & Charming”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

No Ac in rooms but Mother nature took care of that as I stayed in the Rainy season. Realized that wood stove in room would be used during certain months of the year. Pool exceptionally clean & temperature was perfect. A must is the tour to Urique Canyon with Guadalupe. An extremely knowledgeable & friendly guide. Dining room staff, excellent.

“Lovely spot for a short stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2008

We stayed at the Hotel Mision for one night in early September. Our room was comfortable and we were not cold because the weather was still warm at this time of year. The shower had good water pressure though the water did not get more than lukewarm. This could be a problem in cold weather. The courtyard and vineyard were small but very pretty, and the hotel has rustic but comfortable lounge and dining room. The food was good, especially the breakfast buffet, and we found the staff very kind and hard-working. Do not miss the girls's school next door run by the nuns, or the small church next door on the other side of the hotel. I have no information about whether the wine is actually produced from the hotel's vineyard or not, a question raised by other reviewers. The red wine was drinkable and the margaritas were OK. There is not a lot to do in the area so I would not stay more than a day or two unless you want to sit and read a book in the very peaceful courtyard. It is a great place to get away from it all for a time.

  • Liked — Tranquil location, beautiful grounds
  • Disliked — Not much to do so not suitable for a long stay

“Big disappointment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2007

We were there in January and the only heat in the rooms comes from a small, wood burning fireplace in a corner of the room. Our room never got warm. There were hardly any guests at the hotel and there was rarely even warm water. Cold showers in a cold room! Outside temps were between 20 and 50 degrees Farenheit. Brrr. There is also insufficient electricity to even have light enough to read in the rooms. The food is OK, but repetitive. The ride from the train station is very rough and about 45 minutes. The tour to the Canyon was worth every nail biting minute of the treacherous drive. Great driver, great guide (Juan), nice personnel, but it is a very, very basic hotel. There is also really nothing to do in the town...the tour takes less than 1/2 hour.
