“Actually spent a delightful Christmas Holiday here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2011

Actually we went on a Copper Canyon trip with California Native group, which arranged for us to stay here. It was cold but a delightful time. In fact Doug arranged for us to take Christmas Day trip down to Urique which was so warm that we all peeled off our warm coats to enjoy the sun. Urique was quiet with family celebrations, and he chose a little restaurant which served the best tacos in all the world!!! He stopped so that we could see various basket makers, and also pointing out the scenic areas.
Christmas Day was very special as the local children came to Paraiso del Oso to receive presents and hit the pinanta with great gusto.
The food was delicious and was prepared with great care. In fact, I'd bought an apple at the Market for my husband's Christmas present and the ladies made sure that it was properly 'washed' so that he'd not get sick.
If I had a choice I would definitely spend a week here relaxing and exploring the area. The local families that Diego 'watches over' add so much to the flavor of staying here--the girls are so shy but extremely beautiful.

“Great place --off the beaten path”

We visited here as part of a trip we arranged to Copper Canyon. We only stayed 1 night but there were a number of things to do that could occupy several days --hiking, horseback riding, ... Diego (the owner) was friendly and knew everybody in town. The premises were comfortable, clean - we especially enjoyed the kerosene lanterns in the dining hall. All meals were included - you're a long way from anywhere ---and were very tasty. Lorena was quite knowledgeable and witty. Safe and fun.

We had very pleasant four days in the hotel.
Diego and his people are alwys aware of individual interests and possibilities of the guests to make the stay interesting.
Especially we enjoyed the trip to Urique and several tours near the hotel and had many opportunities to admire the phantastic landscape.
The food was home made and excellent.

“Truly cared for and a part of the ambience”

When I visited Diego and Ana's hotel, I was travelling as a woman alone. I had been in contact with Diego to plan my trip coming from Chihuahua and he was extremely gracious and caring in giving me all the information I needed as a woman travelling alone. I can't say enough about the hospitality that Diego and Ana provided, the individual care that they provided me with and the fun that we had sitting around the fireplace in the evenings. A truly lovely hotel in spectacular surroundings. The trip to Urique is not to be missed. A once in a lifetime experience for this Canadian woman. There's no casino or spa or anything like that, but just lovely people, scenery, history, a chance to sit outside and hear nothing except nature. Muchas gracias Diego y Ana.

“Friendly and Scenic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2010

We were 3 couples taking the train through the Copper Canyon, leaving from El Fuerte ( you really have to stay with Jesus at Hotel Torres El Fuerte, but that is a different review) and stopping and staying several nights at different places along the way with reservations made ahead of time. We really did not know what to expect. At our first stop in Bahuichivo we were met by Lorena, a volunteer from England, just as we got off the train. The bags were taken to the van, and our experience began. The Paraiso del Oso is described as "first class rustic" and that pretty well sums it up. The staff is super friendly, which is a comfort for those prone to ask themselves "what am I doing here?" The location is isolated and gorgeous! After a walk along the creek and supper, and a good night`s sleep, coffee was available early in the morning before breakfast to begin the day. We went with Lorena and our driver Miguel ( now is he a good driver, especially for the nervous among us!!!) for a trip to Cerro del Gallegos with nature and history lessons along the way. Ask Lorena to find that elusive "pino triste"! The views were spectacular! We toured the town after and visited a school for some of the local Tarahumara children, a school which Doug, the owner of the hotel , has supported for a long time. In the afternoon ,after lunch, we went horseback riding to the cave of the crosses and throughout the area for more than 2 hours.. Norma was an efficient waitress, and the cooks even adjusted the included meals to suit the tastes of a member of our party. We would not hesitate to recommend the Paraiso to everyone. We had a smokin` hot time there!!! Now, a lot of people have been frightened away from Mexico because of recent publicity. That is a shame!! Most of the reported occurrences happen in Juarez, far away from here ( and other places where tourist venture) , and we can say in our trip of 11 days we never felt uncomfortable, intimidated, or concerned in any way. Our next trip we are planning to see the wintering monarch butterflies inland in the mountains of Michoacan!!
