“Best Athens Boutique Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

The Semiramis Hotel is located in northern Athens away from the hustle and bustle of worldwide tourism. If you're looking for a hotel with a view of the Akropolis from your room, this is not the place to stay. But if you're looking for an unforgettable hotel experience that you can really write home about, this is it. The service, food, and ambience is simply unbeatable within the entire Athens area. The hotel design itself is absolutely spectacular! Forget sending a postcard home with overdone shots of the Parthenon... stay at the Semiramis Hotel and let everyone back home know that you saw the best of Athens AND stayed at a world-class hotel.

We stayed at Semiramis for two nights on Sep 15 and 16. We should have stayed for three nights, but we missed our connecting flight (due to circumstances I won't go into here) and got into Athens one day late.

Immediately upon arrival at the hotel, we were warmly greeted by the hotel staff and totally stunned by the fabulous decor of this awesome postmodern-style hotel. If you've looked at pictures already, don't let them fool you. You really have to experience this place live-and-in-person to get the complete picture. Decorated throughout with unique art designs (all created by the owner) and very modern, chic furnishings, this place makes you feel right at home and comfortable but totally energetic and jazzed all at the same time.

After we checked in, the desk staff took us up to our room on the 4th floor and showed us around. Our room had a splendid bed and a very cool view out into the city of Athens. With massive windows and our own private patio, we enjoyed both the indoor and outdoor parts of the room.

And I can't say enough about the awesome features inside the room. Right at our bedside, we had full controls of the electronically controlled window blinds and all of the room lighting. Forget to turn off the bathroom light before crawling into bed? No worries. Just snap "All Lights Off" on the control panel and drift off to sleep.

Our room also came with a full mini-bar loaded with goodies, drinks, beers and all the rest. The prices were reasonable and the fridge was nice and cold (quite a luxury in Europe sometimes). One of my favorite "little touches" was the complimentary 1-liter bottle of mineral water right in our room. If you're anything like me, you'll know that a nice glass of fresh water hits the spot after 11 hour flights. Also, right in the lobby area, there are always little snacks and water for quenching your thirst after you come tramping in from trudging through the National Archaelogical Museum.

We ate at the restaurant our first night there and loved it. We both ordered nice salads -- Nicoise and Greek -- and enjoyed them immensely along with the complimentary fresh baked breads and our always delicious Mythos beers.

The restaurant area is also impressive with its indoor/outdoor seating and its very cool and very modern furnishings. The staff is super friendly, very helpful, and accommodating. They checked on us regularly and our food arrived quickly and without a hitch. Plus, the little complimentary sweets they gave us at the end of the meal were phenomenal. I'm still thinking about them now as I write this.... Mmmmmmmmmm.

We had our dinner outside just near the pool to enjoy the cool evening air and to enjoy the evening ambience al fresco. The pool is fantastic! Lots of lounge beds for catching rays and an amazing design.

We also spent some time in the lounge area inside the restaurant on our 2nd day to work on our laptops a bit and get some work done. I ordered a classic Greek Frappe (my personal favorite) and absolutely loved it! Seriously, I'm a bit of a frappe connoisseur and they did a marvelous job making mine. Hands down the best frappe I've had in Greece.... ever.

Our second night, we walked around the Kifissia neighborhood to take in the sights and sounds of a local Athens area. This is one of the best things about staying in this outskirts area of Athens -- virtually no tourists and direct access to REAL everyday life in Athens. The Kifissia area is exceptionally clean and very modern. We kept remarking at how nice everything was from the shops and restaurants to the neighborhood homes. This is a great place to walk around and explore to see some real Greek city life. If you're eager to do some shopping in Athens, this is the Rodeo Drive of Athens for sure!

Athens is one of those special vacation destinations everyone must visit at least once in his or her life. From the ancient ruins to the dense museums and cool walkways, this city has a charm you can't find anywhere else. I'm so glad we didn't fall for one of the tourist trap hotels in central Athens. Semiramis Hotel does require some travel to get from the hotel into the main area to see the sights, but taxis are affordable and accessible. Plus, you can catch the Green Metro Line and get straight to the center if you'd prefer.

If you're coming to Athens for the first time, I highly recommend Semiramis. It's a great way to get the best of both worlds -- easy access to Athens sights and exposure to some very cool non-tourist parts of the city.

And -- If you're coming to Athens for a return-visit, I also highly recommend Semiramis. It's a nice opportunity to see some areas you won't find in your Lonely Planet or Frommer's guidebooks but that definitely deserve to be there!

“"And now for something completely different"”

Whilst the quality of the actual rooms could be said to fall slightly shy of what you would expect from a hotel in this price bracket, the actual experience of staying in this hotel is what is the most memorable.

Our group nicknamed it "Barbie's Townhouse", because of the predominantly Pink colour, and the see-through plastic used in the majority of the internal construction.

It certainly created a talking point, and made an interesting highlight to yet another boring business trip, and therefore anything that helps to enliven the drag of business travel is always most welcome, and we would certainly return to the Semiramis for this reason.

“FANTASTIC EXPIRIENCE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2010

I stayed in semiramis hotel in a superior room from 23-26/4/2010 with balcony view to the Kefalari park.First of all there is an in door parking. The staff was polite and friendly .The room was very clean and quiet,no noises from outside or from others room. The desigh is fantastic very different .The colours and the atmosphere relax you.The rooms has no numbers but have patterns which make the whole expirience very interesting. We tasted food from room service and it was great. But there was no place to put the tray and they didnt bring a trolley.Breakfast was really delicious with various of choices.in the room there is no coffee and tea facilities and the bathroom toiletries were not special.Ih the room there is a very good mini bar but very expensive. The hotel is in Kifisia a place really quiet and safety with gardens all around and no traffic. It is about 50 min far away from the historic center of Athens Acropolis,Plaka etc. but it is very easy to go with metro(it will take you 50 min).Near the hotel there are many caffe, restaurants(the best is 21) and also many shops. The hotel has a very nice swimming pool with umbrellas. And also notice that the hotel has a free hi speed internet.

“Quirky!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2010

I was there for a business stay hence chose this hotel which is supposed to target itself to this type of market. Karim Rashid has provided some interesting design elements, with a very clean-cut, no over the top touches anywhere. I would say the lobby and corridors leading to the actual rooms are by far better than the actual rooms themeselves. The rooms are a let down, which although at first glance might seem ultra contemporary and quirky, they lack the quality and the finishing touches that a design hotel of this calibre must offer. The carpets are the biggest no-no. They make the entire room feel outdated although its not as old as one assumes. The bath towels were rather tattered and thinned-out which again is a detail improtant enough, and when one books a double room, you expect two towels, not one as if you are trying to save on towels. The biggest minus is the noise the housekeeping is about making everynorning outside the corridors while they are knocking on guests doors everyone can hear them repeating loudly "hello! housekeeping!" i could hear this repeated about 30 times hence I woke up at 8 after only 3 hours sleep! evidently the walling is not as thick as it ought to be. All this details aside, I applaud the hotel for its excellent service. One of the fastest room service in hotels I have evern been to, (and have been to too many) and the in-room dining was absolutely excellent! The staff were very efficient throughout the reception, right down to the bar, as well as the housekeeing staff. Very well mannered and well trained. Well done, as this makes up for anything that Semiramis might lack behind. It's a refreshing presence in the city of Athens where such hotels are not seen often, and surely it has made a statement in the affluent area of Kifisia where it has become a haunt of some of its' choosy residents. No doubt, had I lived there, I wold have been a regular visitor.

“Design without the details and substance.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2010

As design guy myself, I appreciate well designed objects, buildings, etc.

Karim Rashid, celebrated Industrial Designer, who "designed" this hotel is NOT an architect. This became very clear as I lived there for 8 days. Design is all about the details and the architects in his firm were tilted on form rather than function.

Room: Awful back-lit wall art. flooring/carpet was falling apart. bathroom sink is not quite lined up. water leaks from shower area because there is no door. His pink couch while cute is the quality level of some walmart furniture.

The kicker: the side bed stands is set into the wall. The same in the neighboring room wall. The result about .5" of acoustic insulation which did nothing for some safari sounding couple going at it all night. I was pissed. I wish I can slap the person who came up with this idea and get my 8 hrs of sleep back.

Sorry Karim. I like some of you work and I think that you are a well spoken designer and educator, but I'm just "keeping it real." I barely recommend this hotel because at least they give free wi-fi.
