“Lovely place to stay in Mendoza.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

This was a beautiful place to stay in Mendoza; it was near many of the wineries that we visited. It is a charming, old place that was comfortable and had a great restaurant. The hotel is situated amidst the beautiful vineyard. Most impressive was the artwork that was shown all around the inn, both in the common rooms and in our bedroom.

Our room was large (#3), and our only complaint was an air-conditioning system that was not sufficient for the heat that we experienced during our stay. The beautiful high ceilings made it difficult for the place to cool down enough for our taste. However, they immediately provided a fan which seemed to do the trick; and we had no problem sleeping.
We loved the restaurant and had some of the best steak we ate in Argentina...and the wines were sublime. Each night at 8 PM; they offered a wine tasting for the guests...a nice addition.

We stayed in another hotel in Maipu. We drove out to this winery to eat. The restaurant has a great vibe, and the food is good. I love their sauvignon blanc....
It's great if you are looking for a quiet romantic dimmer in an old wonderful building.

“A place to truly relax.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

There is much to love about this hotel (and restaurant) located amidst the wine groves of Mendoza. Tapiz draws a fine line between country charm and peaceful luxury, and probably strikes it just about right in terms of peace, service and price.

Tapiz is unique for the historic villa, the vineyard setting and for its very good (with excellent being Bourgogne or 1884) restaurant that is open lunch and dinner and can serve poolside snacks all day. This is important as most country hostelries in this area present fixed course, set timed, meals - or worse, at even some of the most luxurious such as cavas, no dinner option at all. Combined with the ritual 8 pm wine tasting, that finished one night at 10pm for a small chatty group of us. There is much to adore.

So let's deal with the pepper of issues raised in some of the reviews. Most are true, and you should set your expectations right. If you want super 5 stars, go for cavas wine lodge (of course at 3x the price). Yes, some of the rooms and facilities (bathrooms and business centre especially) are looking tired. And avoid staying at caza zolo unless you are a large group (when I expect the relative seclusion will make the spot perfect). The spa is a bit grandiose a term for a pair of treatment rooms, jacuzzi and sauna - the massages are great, while don't bother with the manicure. Lastly, claudia and team if your are reading this, the coffee at breakfast is truly awful, please please please invest in a proper machine!

There are 7 rooms in tapiz, with rooms 1,2,3 being preferred. The reason is that they are bigger, with windows out to the pool area (rooms 4 to 7 get light from the door only (opaque glass) as is traditional in this Spanish colonial style building). For my money, Room 3 is best. It is the largest room, with it's own patio near the pool. Room 4, i expect, is the poorest, with being in the smaller group of rooms but also being next to the office.

Lastly, the staff are lovely. The three principal receptionists can work with you to make recommendations and plan your stay, and the kitchen folks are real stars. They all get to know you and made us so welcome. We had a small child, and I must thank claudia for constantly saving me from teary moments when I could not give the boy the focus the young attention seeker wanted.

Let me say, this is the second time we have stayed at Tapiz, and we would not hesitate to recommend it. We are the type to seek atmosphere and welcome over worrying about a couple of material imperfections - and tapiz really has the qualities to make a wonderful stay.

So in the end I could not decide 4 stars or 5. I am going to give it 5 on the basis that mrs tapiz will read this and back her brilliant team up with a few licks of paint and a face lift here and there.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Given the reviews on trip advisor, I thought I had saved the best for last. We spent the last two nights of our vacation at Club Tapiz and I was really disappointed. When we arrived, we were met and told our room was in Casa Zolo which was a surprise to me. I agreed to stay open minded and look at the room. While I understand the importance of the house to the property, it is very poorly maintained. The exterior paint was peeling and when we walked into the common area it was very shabby and dirty. The room we were shown was not impressive at all, although it was big. The bed looked saggy and it was very un-attractive. We were shown another room across the hall which gave no better impression.

We ended up back at the Club in room #4. Size was small but manageable. The bed was saggy and the bedspread was dirty and worn. Towels were dingy and rough. Upholstered furniture was badly stained. Airconditioning did not cool properly. The ceiling in the shower had peeling paint and mildew. Overall, a real lack of attention to detail. Also, it is not a quiet place to stay. It's right off of Rt 60 so there is a lot of road noise.

People kept mentioning the pool in their comments and we would really have loved to use it because it was in the 90s the whole time we were there. However, even though there were a few nice lounge chairs, there were no umbrellas or trees for shade so the sun was blistering. Also the first day we went to the pool was murky and it was filled with grass so I said, let's wait until tomorrow and give them a chance to clean it. It was worse the next day.

They do have a spa but that is a very generous term for the facility. I had a massage and the therapist was excellent. However there was no airconditioning in the room so she kept the door open throughout the massage. It was a little disconcerting to be covered with a small towel and hear people wandering around outside the room.

My assessment of the situation is that they are very understaffed. Only one person was available to handle guests which was quite an overwhelming task with many people asking for help with reservations and recommendations. No one seemed to be supervising the care of the facility. As a result, little things were overlooked.

This is not a bad place to stay. But, it is not the standard you should be receiving given the price and how it's positioned. The people tried really hard to please, the restaurant dinner was absolutely fantastic but it is not a great place to stay. It could be with more attention to the upkeep and cleanliness. I was looking for a great place to stay not just something that was passable.

Room Tip: There are some rooms which face the backside of the property which are supposed to be bigger. I thi...

“A Christmas Treat!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

We spent five nights at Club Tapiz over the Christmas period. It was a real treat. Imagine wine lodge, good food, pool, sunbeds and panoramic views of the Andes. Club Tapiz will be what you expect at a price that won't blow your budget.

The actual building is essentially a courtyard which loops around on three sides with a restaurant/breakfast area on the top side and then a spacious and tastefully designed living room and then the bedrooms. Our room was very comfortable (air conditioning available). The breakfast was very good, nice choice of food with eggs cooked to order. We ate three times in the restaurant and enjoyed the food. Unfortunately, we only tried the desserts with our last meal, they were delicious!

Club Tapiz also has a pool and comfy sunbeds from which you can see the Andes with the snow capped mountains, what a view!! You can also walk around the winery and there is a gym room available. There are also bikes available.

Juliana and her team are very helpful (especially Carolina and Santiago, apologies if I have misspelt the names) and gave good advice. Juliana suggested we go to a restaurant in the Uco Valley called Tupangato restaurant, if you have a car be sure to try it out. Also if you have a car, be sure to go to see Aconcagua mountain, both the drive up to it and the park in which it is located are spectacular. There are tour companies that organise this too.

If you're thinking about going to the Mendoza region, you'll be glad you stayed at Club Tapiz.
