“Vastly over-rated and over-priced! Choose another island if you want the Caribeean”
To start on a positive note, one cannot fault the setting of this hotel and the 2 minute transfer from the airport. It is also true that this is apparently the best hotel on Tobago so I hate to think what the others are like! As briefly as I can, I will describe our experience of Coco Reef. We received no welcome cool drink on arrival and were shown to a room (144) which was totally unacceptable as it shared a terrace with 2 adjoining rooms with no privacy whatsoever. There are no signs on the patio doors and when I returned to our room, after having to go and get drinks, my husband had closed the doors and I unfortunately walked into it, smashing one glass and cutting my hand. That was the start of our holiday. We subsequently moved rooms to 208 which was much better on the second floor overlooking the pool and beach. The pool was clean on our first day but got progressively more dirty and it took them 7 days to clean it properly with chemicals, after I complained (we watched them just swished the dirt around the bottom each morning). I therefore could only swim in the pool on the first and last day of our 11 night holliday. I considered it so dirty as to be a health hazzard. Fortunately, the sea is on the hotel doorstep and I could swim in the lagoon instead. The biggest disappointment of our holiday was the food. It got so bad that we were dreading dinner each evening, particularly the "Al a carte" which is 5 out of every 7 nights but the buffet wasn't much better. They don't have a coffee machine, so it is all instant. If you like good fresh coffee, take your own with a coffee maker but make sure you request a kettle in your room, as these are not supplied as standard. There are many other things we disliked, all relatively minor, but nonetheless irritating. 3 days before our departure, I discovered my £200 brand new ipod missing from our room, which was just about finished us off! The manager refused to see me, despite making appointments, sending instead one of his staff, which I found totally unacceptable. A whole day was then interrupted with visits from security and a trip to the Police Station. We never did get a report from the Police, although they said they would email it (this year perhaps?). All in all it was a very disappointing holiday which cost a lot of money and we feel that we may as well have just thrown it all away. I cannot understand the glowing reviews and the amount of people who keep going back. However, after speaking to a number of the repeat visitors, we learned that the standards, particularly the food and wine, have dropped dramatically over the last couple of years. This hotel has become complacant and relies on its repeat business. If this continues, I would imagine they will have very few clients returning and in 5 years time, will be in trouble. Some of the staff are helpful and friendly, Esther being one of them, but others are just downright rude and surly. You can't even get internet access without paying for it and then it doesn't work anywhere in the hotel except in the lobby - what good is that? If you must go and like spa treatments, go to The Healing Hands Salon and Spa which is just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Excellent spa and reasonable prices. Please feel free to contact me for further information.
Room Tip: Ask for one upstairs, preferably facing the beach.
