“~RELAXING~”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2010

I actually just came back from my trip this morning and I must say i enjoyed it. I stayed there for 4 nights with my boyfriend and had a wonderful time. The place is clean, quiet and peaceful. It is also nearby to the amenities, a short walk if there is no access to a vehicle. The staff is very friendly and helpful if need be. The pool is nice, they play a little music to keep the place lively but nothing loud or disturbing, just enough to make you move in the pool. The only hangups i had about the place was that the bathroom sink..i guess since it hasnt been used in a while it gives a slight scent.... after two rinces it goes away. Other than that the place was great. Ooh n their tv shows great too, lol spent lots of dollars at Tropikist once and had no TV to watch for nights cus it never worked. Also the price is great. Check them out.

“Not Bad Budget Place”

The Mermaid Hotel is now under new management as Sun Spree Resort...the word, "resort", is used very loosely in Tobago!

This small hotel is conveniently located on the Store Bay Local Road, near to other restaurants and nightlife. Renting a car is still recommended as it is a three-minute drive to Store Bay and the airport. There was adequate parking out front and a welcoming exterior with a huge sign (can't miss it!). On arrival, the entrance and pool area seemed immaculately clean. The plants were beautifully trimmed and the building was painted in a lovely mild colour. The pool did seem a bit small though, albeit very clean.

The receptionist was friendly enough and escorted us to our room. The room, however, was a let down, when compared to the exterior. There was a cute little patio outside which we rarely used. The lighting was rather dim inside, although the room itself was quite spacious. The linens and furniture were a little tired. The bathroom was well kept, spacious enough and the towels seemed brand new. However, the deal breaker for me was a rather sticky bedroom floor. Seems like it hadn't been mopped in a while - we were quite afraid to let out feet touch the ground unslippered!

Back to the pool - it was quiet enough - not many people seemed to use it even though many of the rooms seemed occupied. However, there was constant noise all day from the restaurant out front. It quite spoiled the peace of swimming. We didn't try the restaurant although it looked welcoming as we wanted to explore the island.

I must say though that the gardener was exceptionally friendly and customer-oriented. In addition to the great work he did with the plants, he was always willing to engage us in conversation and very helpful in keeping a car park for us one night when the restaurant was very crowded and we wanted to go out for a bit. He really humanised the place.

All in all, it was a reasonable budget place - very good value for the $350 per night compared to some of the other places that we've stayed that were budget accommodation at a much higher price! If they changed the lighting and mopped the bedroom floors throughly, this would be a highly recommendable place!

“Public areas immaculate, Rooms look like they belong to another hotel by comparison”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2009

Reception, pool and gardens immaculate on arrival. Room adequate and spacious but dull and basic. Rooms have not been designed and maintained to the same standard as the public areas. When we were there for four night there was only one other couple staying for 2 nights during that period. Is the hotel a failing business or suffering from the economic downturn? The pool was great on arrival, but we couldn't swim to to a fly's graveyard flooating on top for the nex 2 days, it improved slightly after mentioning to the staff, but still too many insects for our liking. The staff were very friendly but breakfast service is def on Carribean time! We took a pack of cards with us to pass the time eventually. We ate at the Toucan and Kariwak which both looked nice, served good food and had people around. At the Mermaid we arrived back at the late hour of 9.30pm to find reception in darkness and locked. We entered through the restaurant to fingd the staff in a bit of a commotion wondering what to do with our room key as we were still out and they planned to go home. There was a security guard overnight. The following evening we were advised to take our keywith us, and enter the propetrty by the side entrance. Either side of the property is privaely owned ground which is not very attractive. If you want a decent view, ak for room 10 or 20, which will be a pool view. Bit of a shame as it looks lovely and could have potential. 10 minute walk to Crown point beach but 30 to pigeon point beach area. Our favourite is the Beach tucked behind 'Bago's bar. It is quiet - beautiful sand, minimal hassle from touts for boat trips, good tropical fish around rock of adjacent co co reef hotel for goggles or snorkle and 'Bagos is really friendly, nice for lunch and a sundowner cocktail.

“ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2009

we stayed at the mermaid in december , during our dive trip , it proved to be a very nice , small hotel , well laid out , rooms were clean , larger than expected , and the staff was very nice , the only problem was that while we were there the rooms were not cleaned unless we asked them to , due to the fact that there was only one key which we kept with us , after finding this out however we left the keys at reception and requested the cleaning service . the waitress in particular was lovely ,amicable and ever so helpful.
