My girlfriend and I stayed at Balam Bali in August 2011 and never really got round to reviewing all the places we stayed at. But if there is one place deserving an excellent review during our 5 week trip of Thailand and Indonesia, it's Balam Bali!
Originally we only planned one night in the Bali room. We first thought it was located very near the centre of Ubud but were mistaken and were lucky to catch a taxi driver from the area who was on his way home. Arriving at the villa, we were stunned by the magnificent setting amidst the rice fields. The little gate at the back allows you to walk into the rice fields and explore on your own.
On the second day, we decided to stay one more night. However, the place was fully booked, so Hubert offered us his own room! But the couple staying in the Siam room left to catch a plane around 9PM so we moved to the largest room of the villa at no extra cost.
We took a small (couple of hours) walking trip with Hubert who lead us through paths only locals can know. Hubert entertained us all the time with facts and peculiarities of Bali and showed us AMAZING rice terrace views and an impressive look at Bali's biggest tree (from up close and from afar).
Breakfast is served on the top terras which provides the best views (even Mt Agung is visible on clear days). For dinner, you can choose from a small selection of meals or just pick the daily menu, which, for the two nights we stayed there, consisted of a delicious mix between Indonesian and Western food.
I have to say all rooms are great and any choice would be good. Don't try to get the room with the best view because it's much better to just sit in the common areas to soak in the beauty of the surrounding rice fields.
Though some would say its remoteness is a downside, this is not true. It is the best place we've seen to enjoy the Balinese countryside and relax. Hubert is a very hospitable and joyous guy who will do everything to make your stay worth wile!
Room Tip: Any room is a good one.
