“A hostel with scenic views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

Stayed here for two nights. This hostel is a very good choice if going hiking in the area because it is very close to the different trails leading up to the mountains surrounding the hostel. It is in a very scenic area. It is not close to any towns so you would need a car. There is a garage in walking distance from the hostel if you need to stock up.
During our stay, it was cold and it rained for most of the time and this is early September so I guess if you want to get the good weather you should go late spring or summer.
The hostel itself is very clean and modern, sheets are provided at reception. Bedrooms have normally got two sets of bunk beds, so you can fit four in a room. Showers and toilets are in the corridors, not in the bedrooms themselves. Everything is provided in the kitchen (bowls, cups, plates etc.) Except of course the food. There is a TV room and an internet room.

I would only recommend this hostel if you are going on a hiking trip.

“Outstanding Luxury Hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

I stayed here twice in the summer of 2011, once with friends (all in our 20's) and once with my mother (in her early 60's) and had an excellent experience of the hostel both times. It is the perfect location for hillwaking or hiking.
The hostel itself is really new and clean and has a much more luxurious feel to it than most. Most rooms have 5 beds and are bright and clean, with a shower and bathroom shared between every two rooms. There are also private rooms available and, while i didn't stay in these myself, I heard purely positive reports from those who did.
There is also a communal kitchen and dining area, with ample clean and spacious facilities. If you fancy a quiet night in you can spend it in the "snug" - a small living room perfect for reading or relaxing by the turf fire. There is also a larger common room up stairs with several leather sofas and a large TV. For families, there is a small play area for children in the dining area with plenty of toys for the under-10's.
Although the location is very rural, there is a handy pertol station and small supermarket literally the next field over :)
My only advise to those travelling here is to consider transport options before you go - the nearest villages are a few miles away and there is very very little in the way of local bus services. There is a good local taxi service available if you don't have a car or a bicycle. If you are going for the Guth Gafa film festival, there is a private bus laid on for those staying in the hostel to go to and from the hostel and Gort a' Choirce/Gortahork.

“Great Hostel”

I visited the hostel in winter and although there were few guests the hostel was open and well heated. The staff were friendly and welcoming with plenty of information on activities available. The rooms were tidy and well presented. The location is in a scenic valley at the foot of Donegal's highest peak, Errigal. The views are breathtaking and the air fresh. breakfast is in the price which is great value. The hostel has a community room where you can chill, watch TV/DVDs and a computer suite to catch up on emails etc. Very nice overall.

“One of the best hostels that I have stayed in”

The Limerick climbing club used Errigal hostel as its base, it was very clean and perfect location for hill walking. The facility was very clean and modern with a shop next door and a pub within 200 metres. A big thanks to Karl and his staff for making our stay so pleasurable and with the good weather we got to see Donegal in all its splendor. we will be making a return to this hostel.

“One of the best - mountain view rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2010

Surprised there is only a few reviews on this hostel. It is well written up by Lonely Planet and deservedly so, it is very, very good. Practically new the stonework is superb, the room I had I managed to jag a dorm by myself, in May, and in beautiful weather. And at the foot of the mountain so what a view to wake up to. Kind of a shame I was by myself really! Facilities are top rate, kitchen and dining are very spacious and the design of the building allows maximum natural light and heat in, obviously built with the cold weather in mind, very smart. Yes you should bring supplies with you as there is limited town amenities, but certainly enough to make yourself a meal and have a few drinks - try the Leo pub as recommended by Lonely Planet, only a short drive away, full of characters and even better if you are a Clannard or Enya tragic. And of course - climb the mountain, it is not hard and begs to be scaled, try and avoid the boggy bits. Great place, a highlight of my two weeks in Ireland. Washing room also very good.
