“So so! Comme ci comme ca!”

We spent a week here in 2010 and while I might go back if I had to, I probably wouldn't! From the perspective of someone who lives in the USA but travels a fair amount, I was very disappointed and felt it was overpriced for what you got.

Here's what we liked:
1) Location: it was conveniently located to visit Normandy - we managed trips to St Malo, the D-Day beaches and Honfleur in our time.
2) Good kids club - ideal for our children who were attending an immersion school in Denver, USA.
3) Excellent indoor playground - our kids (4 and 6 at that time) thorough enjoyed their time there.

Here's what we liked less:
1) Cleanliness: our bathroom absolutely reeked of urine and despite the extra cleaning we requested, the cleaning lady's solution ("close the door") was all we really could do.
2) Pets: I love dogs ... I just do not want to clean someone else's dog poop off my balcony/deck (turned out to be the neighbor's dog). I want to be able to wander around in bare feet - instead I found myself not wanting to go on the deck at all.
3) Customer Service: more unhelpful front desk staff than helpful ... one helpful staff member willingly exchanged complimentary internet access when I asked why they had still not fixed the phone part way into the stay.
4) Cost/Value: seemed expensive for what we got - this was Normandy, not some island in the Caribbean! Admittedly, we stayed in one of the smaller units, but the larger ones were so much more expensive, I'm not sure we would have left feeling much different.

If you stay here - I hope you enjoy it ... we left with a feeling of indifference!

“GOOD LOCATION”

The receptionists had a cold approach and not helpfull at all. The steps to our rooms had displaced tiles which were very dangerous. on the whole we had a nice stay. Our teenage boys enjoyed playing football in the evening. The indoor pool should be left open up to 10 on weeekdays as well.

“Very good value for money”

Just got back from a week at the Normandy Gardens. We chose it for the price and the easy travel from the UK. We wanted somewhere close to the ferry at Caen but with entertainment for the children who are older now and want some time on their own or with other teenagers.

We had a two bedroomed house and we found it was small but private and with reasonable facilities. For self catering we would have preferred an oven instead of just a microwave but everything worked and it was reasonably well equipped. Beds were a bit hard but far better than Butlins and on a par with Center Parcs.

The site was excellent I though with all facilities in proportion to the number of guests. We always got loungers by the pool and could use the sports facilities when we wanted. For the size of the resort (far smaller than we expected from the web site) the entertainment is amazing. There is a reasonably sized indoor pool and two outdoor pools with loungers. There is also a sports complex with a fantastic indoor play area for kids plus two indoor tennis courts, a trampoline, a circus school and a badminton court , some exercise machines, an outdoor 5 a side/basketball court and also outside facilties for volleyball. All of this, including equipment loan, is included in the price - and as I said, not overly used. Just the tennis courts alone with the pools would have made some people happy.

We have a little French but the entertainment in the evenings I thought was excellent. It was run by the entertainment team and consisted of a comedy night, cowboy night, and a revue - It was delivered with loads of energy, lots of creativity and a bit of French-flair/improvisation - which is what we want in France right? It sounds naff but I would heartily recommend trying it oif you decide to go. The kids clubs seemed OK - lightly attended sometime and the teens club had lots of people drifting in and out. There were only maybe five English families when we were there (mainly French and Belgians - some French families own aprtments there) and none with teenagers but our kids waded in and had a good time - making some new friends and improving their French at Le Spot which ran from 9pm to midnight with actiivites in the afternoon also - younger children may find it more challenging but the staff were very friendly and welcoming. In addition there was an introduction to archery, circus skills and tennis tuition provided if you wanted it.

On the site was a friendly and reasonably priced supermarket (which does roast chickens, croissants etc) - helped me out with one coffee filter on day one - thank you, a pizza, ice cream and coffee stall, and a restaurant /bar which we didn't try.

Overall, if you want something quite French with lots of activities and not too large I would have no hesitation in recommending the resort

“Lovely place to stay for all ages”

On arriving we were very impressed with the whole place. There are three swimming pools, all heated and a huge play centre for our 4 year old.
The accommodation was ideal and the terrace area was lovely. We overlooked the valley and had really good views. I would recommend the houses rather than an apartment. In fact we didn't want to eat out and had all our meals on the sunny sheltered terrace. Good job as the british are hit by the euro and even a small pack of nappies was £11!. I would advise anyone to take with them as much as possible, and if arriving late on saturday to take some milk and the small on site shop cannot be relied upon. There is supermarket in Dozule 5 mins by car.
Unlike previous comments we found the beds fine and we did have a kettle. There is only CNN on tv which is english speaking and our portable dvd was very useful. All the staff we encountered were excellent and spoke fluent english.Generally the surrounding area is lovely esp the beaches but it does all feel out of season.

“Better than I thought...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2008

We spent a week at this garden club, me and my partner and 2 children age 4yrs and 2mths. First impression on arriving, the buildings seem fairly modern, although the cottages seemed a bit scruffy from the outside. The reception area was quite big and the staff were very helpful although their English weren't all that good. We arrived very early about 1pm but our check in time wasn't until 5pm, however our apartment was ready well before this time which was good! On entering our apartment in the Le Hameau block it was very clean and smelt fresh and the furniture was very modern. We had a 1 bed apartment - which had two very small single beds with co-ordinating bedding and in the lounge/kitchen diner there was a double sofa bed which when opened was very big but unfortunately the springs under the mattress were very creaky! There was plenty of crockery to go around and the kitchen came with dishwasher, microwave and hob-top and a tiny sink! Everything was spotlessly clean but there wasn't much space in the cupboards to store food so we use the space in the sideboard which the TV was on. TV was a very modern one and had a good sound but unfortunately only one English speaking channel which was CNN (such a shame)! Thankfully we carried our portable DVD/CD player and a selection of DVDs to watch! We had pre-booked the children's club for our 4yr old but she didn't atttend any of the sessions as they started at 9am and finished at 6.30pm which we thought was too much of an early start and late finish. The pools are just like they say in the brochures 10/10 for that...jet streams jacuzzi steam room sauna...fantastic! The mini shop is ok a bit small but it had the basics that we needed - we travelled out to another supermarket which was only about 5 miles away and it had a much greater selection! We also travelled to the nearest beach at Villers sur Mer - quite a large beach but the weather was a bit overcast and we didn't really enjoy it as much as we should. Also there is internet/Wifi access contrary to what the brochures and websites say - but you can only get it in the public areas or if you're lucky enough to have your room near to these areas! You're also able to park fairly close to the apartments and for the cottages you can literally park outside! There's a restaurant on site which we found rather pricey and also if you don't pay for your breakfast in advance when paying for your holiday - it's 10 euros per adult per day! I think that sums up all of the in's and out's of our stay at the Garden Club.....Would we stay there again? Probably!

  • Liked — The modern and clean apartment.
  • Disliked — The lack of English speaking TV channels!
